* Wake on Hauppauge r/c activity (don't want to have to press the power button all the time)
* Reliable wake (don't want to miss a recording)
* Fast wake - how long does it take to come out of S3 sleep (average)?
* Wake from internet - any tools to allow a WOL command to be sent over the internet?
* Any way from GB-PVR to tell the PC to go to sleep - rather then using a timer - that way I have more control in the early testing phase.

- wake on Hauppauge remote won't work, you'll need either a MCE remote or some other solution
- reliable wake on the server for recordings is no problem, fast wake also (sub wakes the system some minutes prior to the time a recording has to start), resume speed depends upon what you do standby (STR) wakes up pretty fast (under 10 sec), resume from hibernate depends upon how much RAM you have (thats the reason i don't do it with 2GB RAM, almost 1 minute for my setup)
- wake from internet as HtV said, depends upon your router
- either use the standby option from the system menu (is that again available in PVRX2?) or create a custom task to call psshutdown with the standby option

Thanks for the replies guys. Think I might try some manual sleeps and see how I (and the GF) get on with it.

I have a Windows scheduled task to switch to "pwrsave" at 22:00 so that it can go to sleep after this time c:\windows\system32\powercfg /s pwrsave ) and am trying to find the batch commands to switch it to "alway on" when wake.cmd runs at any time between 16:00 and 22:00.

How about the USB Cyberlink branded remote that comes with an ATI Theater 550 TV card?

the haupauge remote won't work because it's attached to a PCI device, never heard of wake-on-pci till now Wink

the cyberlink remote might work, if you have one, give it a try (enable any wake on usb option or legacy support for USB devices/keyboards you can find in BIOS & the option "Allow this device to wake the system from standby" in the device manager, if you don't have one try google to find out it that's possible

This thread is very interesting to me bcause I'm in the progress of writing an powermanagment plug-in. In my opinion the (htpc) powermanagment functions need to be improved - especially if gbpvr is used as dedicated set-top-box.

Once I wrote powercontrol (see wiki) because I only used my mvp to watch tv. Now I bought a Antec Fusion Case and replaced the mvp so the old powercontrol isnt usefull any more and I'm in the progress of writing a new powercontrol for htpc use. (if I hold my current writing speed it will be ready at the end of 2012 Smile

First: wake up is working (and ever was) fine for me. Going to standby isnt far as easy. Its interesting to me to see that some people leave their (gbpvr-) pc switched on all the day. May I ask why ?

@martin: you wrote that you activate your powersaving at 22:00 and you want "allways on" between 16:00 and 22:00. What behaviour exactly do you expect after 22:00?

Currently I implement the following behaviour:

after "wake up" the pc is in "unattended" mode, that means:
- keep awake while recording
- keep awake while there are tcpip connections at port 80 (ewa) or active mvp connections.
- keep awake while certain processes (epg update, defrag, comskip etc) are present.
if that actions are finished, wait 60 sec and then go to standby or hibernate

if an active user is "detected (user actions: the active plugin changes or some file starts to play) the mode is "attended" which means keep alive until the user powers off (via remote or menu). If so the mode change to unattended so any in progess recording may be finished and then go to s3 or s4.

Any improvements / suggestions ?

@sub:
May I right that you are setting powermanagment features "programm needs system and monitor" after startup ?

I have two power schemes. "alwayson" and "pwrsave" these are for XP's power properties. "alwayson" is just that and "pwrsave" is S3 standby after 5 minutes.

At 22:00 XP scheduler runs "pwrsave" so that if MVP, clients etc are not used the server goes to sleep.

If the server is woken up (by mvp, client or recording) then power scheme should be set to "alwayson" if this happens from 16:00 to 21:00.
(I don't know the syntax yet, but something like the below in wake.cmd :-

If hour{16,17,18,19,20,21} then powercfg alwayson

The only reason for the above is to remove the wait from coming out of standby during the evening for tjhe impatient viewers.

I have just been using the standby mode for a couple of weeks now. I got it to work with the MVP so the MVP does WOL the HTPC. The only real problem I have is that I get my EPG using MCE2xml. MCE is not on my HTPC so they both have to be WOL active so the HTPC can get the EPG. The problem comes in that when you wake either PC, they must hit the network and wakes the other one as well. Sometimes they go back and forth waking each other up until they finally settle down to sleep. Its kind of like my kids trying to go to bed.

Anyway, I like them sleeping now and the office is actually a lot cooler because of it. I thought it was just the sun on the room but the PCs really added quite a bit of heat. My thought is every kilowatt counts as they say. If we can save any energy, then it is less that we have to buy.

lol

I tend to have two domain servers, two GBPVR servers, mrs ACTCMS's desktop and my laptop all powered up 24/7 - OK so the screens are off or in powersaving mode and the disks might spin down, but I suppose I should be doing more for the planet (and my wallet).

Maybe it's time to have a section on power saving in the wiki (no - I'm not volunteeringBig Grin).
