This is unbelievable. I had devised a system of using SCHTASKS to schedule a once-only job 20 seconds into the future. This worked brilliantly, giving me a reliable system of standby during trial after trial after trial. This morning, I logged on, rather smugly, intending to write up and post my solution...and I can't stand by. At all. To test the reasons why, I put a task in the task scheduler to run "when idle". It hasn't run once. Does anyone have any idea what could have changed overnight to prevent my system from reporting any idle time?

After trying to stand by unsuccessfully many times, I restarted the recording service and standby worked. I tried several more experiments and SOMETIMES (not always) running a recording would kill the ability to go into standby after some idle time. When this happened, resetting the recording service fixed the problem. I set up a reset as part of my batch system. Having said that, the thing is not standing by now, but that could be unrelated.

Unfortunately, as soon as I use PowerCFG to change the standby settings, the idle threshold is reset to its higher level again. Sigh. I'm fairly certain that it is the GBPVR Recording Service that is getting the system all excited. If I run short tests (most recently a series of 6 2-3 minute recordings with various gaps between them) then the idle activity returns to a fairly normal level fairly quickly--often 100%--and the system stands by. However, if I record an entire show or more, then the idle level remains quite low afterward, believing there is system activity. This prevents the standby. When I have played with shutting down the recording service (not restarting it), the idle level has become normal fairly reliably. The new MCE Standby Tool has at least allowed me to monitor all of this. |
