When I tried to use VLC's gui to capture to a file, it gave me all kinds of grief. Even when I tried to make it use the hmeloff driver, it wouldn't do it. But when I ripped the command line out of the gui, and then added some of the screen commands from mvallevand's links, my system just slowed to an impossible crawl. I think I might crank down my resolution and try again later. It would be great if it works.

Fraps for games. Camstudio for everything else.

It takes a lot of oomph to record at HD resolution at 25+ fps. I tried a bunch of free ones the other week and came back to Camstudio. My computer isn't anything special nowadays, 2.8ghz C2D and a 2900pro card. It recorded HD at 30fps using I think around 80% CPU. Hmm, maybe 60% CPU. I was playing an avi at the time on screen too to see how it recorded it. Looked good.

I don't know what you're using it for, but recording in full HD is pretty extreme for most things.
