I have the same problem sometimes. I don't think it's the hardware. I think it takes longer for the qam signals to sync into the capture card and gb-pvr does not wait long enough. I wonder if there is a setting to make it wait longer for the signal to sync. If I want to view a qam channel sometimes it's says no signal then I retry and it comes up.

Have you tried setting this in Config.xml?:
<BDASubmitTuningRequestTwiceOnRecord>true</BDASubmitTuningRequestTwiceOnRecord>

Also try changing BDACheckSignalStatusDuringRecording to "1" and BDADisableStatusChecks to "false".

I just want to given an update to this issue. As I reported a couple of weeks ago, the issue appears mostly resolved. Uninstalling WinTV7 seems directly related to this issue being resolved. Specifically, after uninstalling WinTV7, I now I get about 30% of my recordings occur on the second chance (I get a second ts file with "-1" in filename). This is about the same proportion of recordings that were failing before I uninstalled WinTV7. Before the issue was resolved, I would never see the second chance recording attempted.

I don't know how GBPVR detects the recording is bad and tries again, but I suspect WinTV7 was preventing this detection from occurring on my system.

I did have one recording recently fail on the second case too. This was the first failed recording I had had in nearly 3 weeks. As far as I know the cable could have been out for a while, but maybe a third attempt would have got it.
