While I only get one tuner, my cableco does provide timeshifting of Canadian and American networks with both east and west coast feeds so I have repeats and six hours to play with which is like two tuners.

So what hardware are you using to capture HBO?

He's using an Hauppauge HDPVR.

I have it on good authority that there will be new HDPVR-like products shown at IFA in Germany in the next couple of days.

I figured he was using a HDPVR but wanted to verify. Now if some of these new devices take HDMI as an input and they act like a TV to the STB, then we should be really well off. Even without HDMI, more competition can only help us on pricing and features.

I still would prefer a direct cablecard solution to record the channels I pay for, but such is life. I kind of understand new movies, PPV, etc, but I just don't get flagging The Learning Channel or Speed. Not much black market for those shows. I guess logic does not alway prevail.

The big problem with including HDMI is that you cant capture HDCP protected content, which is applied by most STBs. This makes HDMI a bit awkward for capture, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what IFA brings...

Yes sorry for the confusion it is an HDPVR. For me I don't know how if it could be better, the only thing I can't do is capture PAL input, and GraphEdit shows the proper res., so I suspect drivers are the problem. Does Hauppauge ever hire good programmers Big Grin ?

So you run you STB component output to the HDPVR to create your recordings? I assume you can move them to the network or something that allows viewing via NPVR?

There's a lot of connections. I have the HDPVR and an STB in the closet hooked up with component and spdif for ac3 audio.
There there is a USB connection from the HD PVR to my NPVR server and I also use a firewire interface to change channels.

The statement below that concerns me as we all know cable company's will screw this up if not already flagged. if not I would not be surprised they will or CableLab would not be so willing to release it. Just my 2 cents worth.

, it will get you any content that your cable company has not flagged with copy restrictions.

I was reading tgb's forum tonight and it seems there were problems in many areas in the US recording NFL games on their new Ceton cards because of the Copy Never flag meaning it couldn't even be watched in 7MC. Overall this seems like quite a risky way to go digital.
