I've been doing a little more playing with nPVR and it looks like some of my issues were with the skin I was using. I'd loaded the latest version of the 'NextBlue' skin and set the preferred style to 'Horizontal'. If I go back to sub's 'Default' skin then both my issue with wherever I click on the main screen always activates the menu option thats directly above or below goes away, as does the not being able to move to a point in a video by clicking on the progress bar which is HUGE step forward!
I'm still not seeing the 'Settings' option either in the taskbar icon or the button top left corner of the nPVR window, and I still can't get a picture when playing an mpeg2 .mpg file on any of the available Video Renderers with the Mpeg2 video decoder set to ffdshow video decoder. It does, however, work if I'm playing an mpeg2 .vob file and it still works if I rename a previously not working .mpg file to .vob, so I'm guessing that there's an issue somewhere there with file extensions. (If I set the video renderer to VMR9 and try to play a .mpg file then I get an error box appear saying "Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. Objext reference not set to an instance of an object." Clicking Continue does return control to nPVR but if you try playing the same or another .mpg file then the get the same error. I'll try to attach what comes up if you click on the Details button. If you rename the .mpg file that caused the error to .vob then it works fine!?! :confused
Unless someone comes up with a brilliant fix in the next couple of days, I'll probably uninstall both GB-PVR and nPVR and ffdshow, clean out the registry, re-download nPVR and the latest ffdshow and see if that sorts things out.
Once again, thanks for all your speedy suggestions and advice.
p.s. Sub, I didn't know about the {No. of minutes}{skip} feature until after I'd spent quite some time ploughing through the wiki yesterday. I suspect I shall be using it quite a bit!

Great.

I'm not really sure why that would be. It definitely works here. It could be something slightly different about XP vs Win7/Vista though. I only have the latter here.
For the record though, the I was referring to the task itself in the task bar, not the tray icon (which is a different process, only intended for letting the user know if a recording is happening or not). ie, it'll be somewhere along the bottom of the screen between the 'Start' button and the task tray.

I dont think it's related to the video renderer. Have you using a MPEG2 decoder other than ffdshow?

For this test I'v been using the default skin on all computers. The very strange thing is that the two computers running W7Ux64 where it works and not works, have identical hardware except for the graphic card, and exactly the same software too.
BTW: I get the Settings in the icom-menue too.

On XP Pro SP3, I see Settings on the window control menu but not on the taskbar icon.
