Update - I finally found time to do a complete uninstall/new install of NPVR 2.5.5, everything works OK now. Not sure what happened, but happy to be able to record again.

Another quick (and hopefully final) update:

The problem reappeared a few days ago. After pulling my hair out for a few days, and on the brink of doing a complete Windows XP reinstall, I saw this thread this morning:

I had of course run the dvbfix years ago after the XP SP3 update, but on the off-chance something had changed, I ran it again. Voila! Problem solved. I must have inadvertently corrupted one of the drivers at some point.

Weeks of frustration solved in about 10 seconds - the forum saves the day again!
