On the Settings->Decoders screen you can also specify what video renderer you want to use. The default is EVR.

Also, do you think this is an exclusively Win 8 RTM issue?

Are you maybe usin Win 8 standard (not pro), and 'Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder' is not been activated for playback of MPEG2 content, which I think only happens when you have Pro with WMC addon installed.

I dont know that is. You can probably install LAV or ffmpeg to get other MPEG2 decoder options.

Because Media Center is not available for install until Oct. 29. This the reason I am trying to convert to NextPVR. I guess this means I cannot have a dvr again until WMC is released for WIN 8 Pro...

Why not? You just have to install another decoder rather than using the Microsoft decoder.
