XBMC and NextPVR - A user guide

"Download a PVR Build from below" (ie.. Build 10/01/2012 (Release) - sub3-xbmc-pvr-addons-262683)
Unzip the contents of the PVR Build and copy to your C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\addons folder (assuming u are not still on xp)
Run XBMC and enable/configure the PVR Backed of choice
Enable Live TV (in system, settings, live tv)
then you should have a Live TV menu item.

Thanks gEd, too much like Hairy's skin for my liking. Hope he is out there still and approves! I do not like the way that NextPVR sometimes jumps to conclusions...... But that was always the way and always will be.

I think you'll find it was the other way around. Hairy designed a skin to look like xbmc's.

My 2 cents is that it's still too "beta" for me. I could get it going if I wanted to. But, NextPVR has matured into almost perfection for me. My family finds it simple, the interface is clean and does what we need it to (plus some eye candy thanks to plugins like TV Listings and a few other goodies here.)

Now, I'm fortunate that I'm in education and get Windows DIRT cheap, so I can afford to use my old PCs as clients for NextPVR. It's awesome, even more so that I've gotten some used Intel Mac minis for the clients (running Windows, of course).

If I didn't have that discount for Windows I'd be ALL OVER XBMC running it on Linux as a client. In fact, that's an EXCELLENT solution for folks once the latest builds of XBMC are a little more stable. Raspberry Pi + Linux + XBMC + NPVR. It just makes you drool.

Correct me if I am wrong sub. Hairy rescued NextPVR that the gui was looking pretty shitty in and came up with a skin that you adopted and worked for you. Don't rile me. I have the emails!

Yep thats correct. I'm just saying xbmc had that look before Hairy came up with it. ie, its not case of Hairy's skin later being adopted by xbmc.

No worries sub. I am too long in the tooth and too late in the game. I love this xbmc integration. Just trying to get a feel for what is going on here.

My 2 cents is that it's still too "beta" for me.

it IS too beta for primetime compared to NPVR. It does not have the absolute focus on the scheduling and playback of TV recordings and EPG that NPVR has.
It does have a superb FF/RW mode tho... (even if SKIP throws me back to the menu)

It's a bit of fun to experiment when the family are not watching npvr.

Just to set people's minds at ease - I'm still going to be focusing on the NextPVR UI. I'm not abandoning the existing UI, or telling people they should be using XBMC instead. This XBMC addon stuff is just about getting more people using NextPVR. I'd prefer them to be using the NextPVR, but I'm just as happy to have people simply using it as a backend for XBMC.

If anything, having used XBMC has inspired me to improve some stuff in the NextPVR UI, so we're likely see some improvements to the UI in coming releases.

Thanks sub for clarification. That really is all we need as end users. IMHO you have 2 ballgames going on here.

One: NextPVR the only solid and stable and freely available Windows based PVR solution available in the market today.

Two: a backend PVR solution that integrates the brilliant capability of having liveTV available on demand.

Sorry if I got fractious earlier. That was just me in a bad mood!

I would still like someone to really start explaining this xbmc integration in a more wiki like way to me.
