Agree.... but mostly will stretch the budget (up to a point) if it necessary to get something that works really really well Wink
I'm also sure I'm not the only old fart around here
I am another old fart Big Grin
(actually I know for a fact of at least another two that think the same as I do) that uses only extenders & have no intention of running XBMC (after playing with it & not liking it or it's development cycle at all)
What do you not like with XBMC's development cycle Jaggy? I am finding the whole NextPVR backend with the xbmc frontend very interesting.
& as my A100 has just stopped talking to the remote & I'm now running on my spare NMT I have been thinking about this quite a bit the last couple of days wondering what I will do if another one goes belly up....
I've pretty much started dropping out my NMT's now and slowly replacing with pi's running raspbmc. I can't see a cheaper extender out there? But of course the question is they are running xbmc and it is still not perfect with the LiveTV part via NextPVR and I kind of feel unfaithful to NextPVR by moving to a different front-end but then again not really as NextPVR was always about the way it is primarily about capturing/storing and serving LiveTV?

I know Martin has had some pi issues but I am still trying to find them

a much NextPVR fan

I also have had a look at XBMC under OpenELEC, Ubuntu, Windows and most recently on an Android media player but keep coming back to the fact that I find it so much easier to use native Windows NextPVR menus. My NextPVR use is almost entirely TV record and playback so more key presses are required for every function under XBMC. Not having "EPG" and "Recordings" on the top level menus is the main problem? X-NEW is a big step in the right direction but at the moment it is not quite there (Sorry Martin!) and cannot yet compete with the native NextPVR interface.

As I said in another thread the Sumvision Cyclone X2 I bought was excellent value for money with its fast 2 core processor and GPU so easily plays 1080p and comes in a proper box with lots of i/p & o/p connections! As I don’t want to use XBMC with NextPVR at the moment its on loan to my daughter who uses it for on line content like Netflix and catch-up TV and cannot believe how little it cost. My grandson plays Angry Birds on it also which shows that I am yet another old(er) person as well!

Hey, don't talk about me like that! Wink
My old PCH is still working though I worry about the 500GB hard drive in there as it gets very, very, very hot. Even my USB drives get hot after a short while and it's in an open area.
I always keep my eyes open for something to take it's place once it goes.

No offense taken, it is lacking in many areas from a UI and speed perspective, but it does provide the full PVR functionality which was my only goal.

I have the Pivos M1 and M3 who really were the company that funded development that got the Amlogic player working and I am patiently waiting for their next-gen box with a dual or quad. I imagine these newer boxes are nice clients but I'd rather support Pivos to keep them working on XBMC.

You've missed the point it is not a bad computer, but I have found so many better solutions. The only real advantage I have found for the RPi is the price. I prefer to pay a little bit more for a little better experience.

Martin you know me now of old Wink

And yes I suspect I did miss a point here along the way.

I guess this thread is a double/triple headed hydra.

I was picking up on Jaggy's mention of xbmc. I was, in one way, being unfaithful to NextPVR.

Given everything you did with the Hauppauge MVP's and then the NMT's I guess a load of us are still waiting to see what a new generation of extenders may bring. BUT also I think a load of us do consider the cost implications of extending through a household?

At my optimum time I was running a mix of MVP's and NMT's into 9 rooms in my house. I realize now that was fun for me and the family BUT a bad investment long term. They are now pretty much all defunct.

I still stick by my (I hope) logical investment that I need a fully functional media front-end served through my house in the cheapest way possible. This from the start (me being an old fart) revolves around a centralized service for LiveTV and setting recordings but why do I then need a 'better experience' in which case I think you mean speed and video quality? In my Kitchen when I wash up?

The Pi seems to be delivering? It seems to handle HD very well. I cannot find a complaint with it yet....

Here's a much more competitively priced i.MX6 box http://cubox-i.com/table/ which is complete even with an IR receiver. I ordered the Dual Pro ($120 shipped with A/C adapter) and next year I'll be able to let you know how it is.

Further to my post in September. I've had my cuboxi for about a month now and is shaping up to be a reasonable client, it's not quite there but close. I haven't had success with sub's PVR Addon, but x-newa is running really well for something that really has only been in the wild for a month or so. Interestingly it is is running 1080p BD ISO, MKV and 1080i mpegts in h264/m2v quite well but I still can't run 720p full screen. I'll see if I can get my HDPVR to capture it to give an idea of the speed. The built in IR receiver does a good job with both MCE (RC6) and Hauppauge (RC5) remotes.

In many ways I feel it is shaping up to the be the next gen RPi. The reason I am posting now is that it looks like it will be appearing in the US http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...isNodeId=1 pretty which is pretty high profile distribution for this kind of box. I personally have the i2ultra and it runs XBMC just as well as my Wandboard Quad and I don't think for streaming from NextPVR that it is needed.

Here you go it should be ready soon. http://youtu.be/br71eg0V4fw a tiny bit of UI navigation in Web client. I page up a few screens in the guide and then use the 2 to get back to the first channel. I show some 1080i then 720p live TV too and I think when I zoom it you can see the 720p problem, its not the capture.

At the end playing a blue ray iso over a share with no issues so it should be capable of 720p

Martin, thank you for keeping us informed about something new for an extender. I have parts coming in this next week then I will start my "new" NextPVR build.

It seems I am not alone in finding the perfect extender for the house. I hardly ever streamed live TV from SageTV through my old MVPs. It just was a bit jittery unless you paused for a second or two, then hit play. I am mainly looking for the playback of recorded TV and second, movies. Which then brings in a quick question.....is there a "best" way to rip movies for playback in NextPVR? I haven't really closely read much of the NextPVR documentation and been able to pick out a best format.
