In theory all PC add on devices such as a video card, PCI card or USB device and all PC software should work together but in practice many combinations don’t work correctly. My son had a laptop with a known incompatibility “feature” which meant it would not run the iTunes software. On several occasions at work and at home I saw cases where an add card on such as a video card seemed faulty so I replaced it and all started working. However that “faulty” card worked as normal in other computers.

Video cards tend to be the most troublesome devices. I have 2 old but still powerful Nvidia cards supplied with Dell computers but neither will work correctly in any other computer. In your case as you have tried drivers the easiest solution is to temporarily replace the video card as a test. A box of computer spares comes in very useful for fault finding!

Thanks again folks.

I uninstalled the current drivers and the Microsoft WDM drivers that get installed, have the same stutter as the ATI ones, which I yet to try.

My motherboard and system is pretty old (circa 2008) so I don't really want to throw too much at it (better to stump for a whole new rig at some stage) but if I would see a reasonable improvement I'd be happy to shell out for an updated card and be done with it.

So, I can get one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814161394 here for around US$40. It's a "HIS Silence H645H2G Radeon HD 6450 2GB (here it might be 1GB) 64-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card", although apparently I can't make use of PCIe 2.1, mines only PCIe 1.1 (ASUS P5K Pro MB uses Intel P35 Chipset apparently, which is PCI 1.1 only). It'll run OK though.

Is a Generic Radeon HD 6450 going to show me big improvements over the HD3400 you think?

I have always had far less problems with Nvidia cards than AMD. I have several basic GeForce 210 and they are more than adequate. Latest AMD problem is no HDMI sound unless TV was on and switched to that HDMI input at boot time.

I would expect so - and you could use the 14.4 drivers which have just come out.

If you could find a HD7*** series card these are what AMD are writing the drivers to suite best now.

I have recently replaced my HD5690 with a HD7700 due to failure and I is very impressed - particularly with the Video Quality and Open GL Visualizations program I use (R4) in MediaMonkey on a 50" Plasma.
This is on a 2008 AM2+ Motherboard with Windows 8.1 (Finally got Update1 to install after 3 weeks and a fresh install - should I bill Microsoft for 60 hours labour?)
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh
