Crashes when I try to rewind live tv

Extended timeshift uses an older http server in NextPVR that doesn't seem to work that well with Kodi and I never really figured out why that extra buffer time was needed but glad you got something working. The technology is changing for v5 of NextPVR so there is little point in developing this much further. Perhaps the dev. who wrote v18 timeshift will one day fix the problem that lead me to work on the alternative.

Kodi and NextPVR don't need VLC so that is not the source of the problem. There is a hook to VLC in the older NEWA "classic" web interface but I don't think many people use that anymore.

What issue are you talking about?

1. Timeshift is unchanged and can crash. The author of the code abandoned it.

2. Extended Timeshift continues more reliable but slower to start. I haven't seen too many reports related to it crashing

For v5 neither mode is supported but sub recently introduced a new form of time shifting and there is a new client that users in this forum have begun testing. If that is what you are looking for feel free to join the testing.

v5 is stable for watching live tv in kodi and emby. In the case of kodi, timeshift of live tv is disabled unless you use the new updated test version of the addon, giving you the new v5 timeshift. In the case of Emby, they do their own timeshift on the Emby side of things. For Emby you'll need the updated Emby addon.

For the existing Kodi addon, with NextPVR v4, 'real time' mode was best, 'timeshift' could occasionally crash but generally worked ok, 'extended timeshift' was slow but more stable than the normal 'timeshift' mode.

v5 with the updated addon is the best option so far.
