Too many means more than you watch.

I installed LibreElec and the same problem persists.  I've tried reducing the number of channels significantly to no avail.

I did it (I think)!  Using LibreElec I turned off "Allow hardware acceleration with DRM PRIME" in the player settings.  It seemed a bit sketchy for a while - it would display about 4 seconds of the channel before reverting to a black screen and then the television would say no input and I'd have to unplug and re-plug the HDMI cable.  Sounds stupid now, thinking about it, but the television isn't an HD ready TV, so must have been something to do with the resolution.  I still wanted to be able to watch HD inputs though rather than be restricted to just SD channels.  I'll mark as solved (for now!)
Thanks again for the suggestion of LibreElec.  It's much more responsive than xbian.

LE is definitely more optimized for the RPi and you might be able to get support for this issue on their forum. The monitor was actually identifying that it was full HD there are a few people that can help there. The RPi is a bit finicky with HDMI
