I'm thinking that this might be the way to go.

And it would eliminate the need for a tv-out card (or cable to make it work ;-)?

Presumably, you have to install gbpvr on the MVP box somehow - I thought the Hauppauge one's OS was Linux?

Would this one work with GBPVR (sorry to be such a 'noob')?

I'm really sorry to 'bug' you, but I've just been given budget approval (this second) by the misses for a MVP. If the one I posted a link to works (and reading the comments I notice a few people mentioned GBPVR, so I assume that it does), then I wonder if you could tell me what the quality of the Live-TV is through the box?

Yes, the MVP connects directly to the TV via Scart and the picture comes over the network so there's no need for TV out of any kind. While the OS of the MVP is Linux based this only acts as a 'shell' for the MVP application which is windows based, held on the host PC and loaded every time you power the unit on. However, Sub has somehow managed to persuade the MVP to load a GBPVR client instead of the native application and thus you get GBPVR on the MVP!!

Just a couple of things you should be aware of though. If you want to use live TV or watch a recording in progress then you must use an MPG muxer as the MVP can't handle DVR-MS. Pre-recorded DVR-MS files can be transcoded on the fly so you can watch existing files but it's imposible to do this on a DVR-MS recording in progress.

Also because every action/screen update you perform has to be sent to the host pc, processed and sent back to the MVP there is a very slight delay in button presses. It's not too bad and you soon get used to it but it's not as snappy as the PC. Also becuase of the extra processing you will see a rise in CPU usage so if you're pretty maxed out already then it will make things worse.

These are really just minor points but it's best that you are aware before purchase.

BTW Dabs have a good price for the MVP at the mo! http://www.dabs.com/

The Ebuyer one would also be fine Smile

I can't really give too detailed coment on the quality as i'm using mine on a 14" portable in the bedroom and anything looks good at this size - but it appears better than the TV out from any graphics card i've used before. I've also heard other people with larger screens say the same thing and i'd feel more than happy connecting it to big TV.

Excellent - thank you for the quick reply.

The processor is a Dual Core P4 2.8mhz with 512meg RAM (which I can of course increase if nessisary), and this is a dedicated box (always wanted to do this, back in the days before the machines could handle it, so decided to buy the M/Board and chip specifically for it), so it should be ok, no?

Ok, my ignorance is showing now, but how do I use a MPG muxer? Also, do you think it might be worthwile upgrading my network to a 1000 - at the moment it is 100 - would 100 be enough?

er but it's dchurch24's thread.....

One of the popular mux'ers is the cyberlink one but don;t go around asking where to download it from..

http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php...2&postcount=73

or search forums for "5.0.0.1307"

The mvp only supports up to 100MB
