Sheik Yerbouti Wrote:How about the playstation 3? You've talked about it before, but I don't know if you were positive about it. The price it almost the same as the mini Mac (at least here in The Netherlands).

I was really excited about the ps3 when I read that it run a supported linux from Sony. I became a little less excited when I found out the linux wasn't providing complete access to the hardware info, which has hurt mvpmc development quite a bit.

Right now though the biggest factor seems to be heat and noise. I keep my mvp on a lot and from what I understand the ps3 runs very hot and when the fan comes on it is noticeable. However like 1080p on the mac mini I want to hear it from a real user and not believe what I read, there are a lot of fanboys out there.

Another factor with the PS3 is the fact that my wife told me after I bought a Dreamcast (which I still like) that I can't buy another gaming console as long as Link in Zelda is still a little boy on my N64.

The drive behind the Mac Mini is the form factor. Mac Mini = small and pretty. PS3 = huge and deformed. Smile

That, and the chance to be running MacOS X natively.

A Darwin based port, does this mean that OS X is still running? I'm trying to visualize this setup, but it's not clear to me.

Darwin is a lower level programming method with OS X, close to its unix roots.

I expect mvpmc will compile with no errors to darwin and then I just will need to figure out out to add the audio, video and remote control layers. The first go round will be to mplayer. This is why I like the OSX and PS3 solution, I will be able to use mvpmc's native code, rathe then rebuilding it like I will be doing for other platforms.
