dgeezer Wrote:Zehd's links to the wiki are all you need to get the old pc set up as a client. Sub has made this part pretty simple.

Before you do too much though you may want to verify that the pc that will be the client is capable of playing back the HD files. Mine is not able to play live TV from the server so I don't have it set up as a true client. We only use it to watch recorded shows so it is really just using GBpvr as a nice interface to browse files on the server. This is done by setting up the shared network folders on the directories tab in the config app. You could probably do this to try playing files across the network before trying to get a remote working.

My "client" can play back HD files that have been processed with Videoredo to remove commercials and saved as an .mpg file but it won't play back the unprocessed .ts files from the 1600.

Thanks I'll look the Zehd's notes. I also will test this on the old PC before moving anything. I am willing to buy more memory on the old PC if that makes a difference. Both PCs have 200 GB+ hard drives, so I am in good shape there.

One other thing I am wondering is how the HD gets from the old PC to the HDTV? The Sharp TV has HDMI input, but the old PC has a vga connector and I didn't think it would support HD. I am guessing I would also have to buy a HD video card for the old computer, which may be hard to find one that is supported.

Yes if you want HD which is the original point, you will need a card that can support it, and connect to the HD screen

I doubt I can find a HD graphics card for a PII, 256MB Ram, running win2k, so I think that throws out the idea of a server/client setup and puts me back to moving the new computer by the TV and accessing it with a wireless keyboard/mouse if the TV is not in use and accessing remotely from the old computer otherwise. Any other suggestions?

Also, in the setup above, if someone was watching livetv with GBPVR, could someone else work on the computer remotely from the old pc? I am guessing no.

To have one computer display a session, (GB-PVR showing some TV or whatever) and remoting into that same computer to use it, is I think called Multi-session Remote Desktop)

Basically its a terminal service.

If I was a fortune teller, I'd the say the way you should do it, (and they way it will end up anyway) is get another computer. Use the good one you have as a media pc, and get another faster one for other people of the house.

You'll probably still use remote control to admin the media pc, and you may wish to watch recorded content on the network...

But if you want a fast responsive HD computer AND a decent (fast) computer for email surfing games business etc... You should have two good computers...

The PII would be great as a SD Media Client though, so don't through it out...

I'm talking a bit out of my posterior here, because I have not done exactly what you're talking about, but I'm running a P4 desktop out of my home office with three tuners in it (one PVR150 and one PVR500). I usually watch all of my shows on the PC in my office (in the m-m-m-m-m-m-massage c-c-c-c-c-c-chair! Wink), but the family watches it via two MediaMVPs -- one in the family room on a 60" DLP and the Doubting Thomas wife watches on a 42" plasma in the master bedroom. Both of these displays are HD capable. Of course, none of my PVR150/500 recordings are HD, but I do download some HD quality Divx/Xvid files and then watch them via one of the MVPs. I know that I'm not getting true HD after the on-the-fly transcoding for the MVPs, but it's pretty darn good and better than the usual recordings.

I don't know if that makes sense or is even possible (maybe it's all in my head), but it might be worth trying to playback some of the HD recordings via the MPV and see if you feel the same way.

GBPVR system info intentionally left blank because I'm personally
insulted that you can't remember it from previous signatures.

No, I'm not.

But from clicking on the link in your signature, I can clearly see that I need to be using it. I really don't know how I miss these things. I frequent the forum, I look at the new releases and new plugins, but every time I turn around, I'm missing something major like this.

Thanks for pointing this out!

If your HD have auto aspect ratio switching, you may want to try ZProcess2. But be sure ZProcess1 is working first... Number 2 is still in development...
