There's no hardware difference between the Hauppauge IR remotes is there? Like, the one you get with one card should plug in and work fine with any other, right?

After a thorough poking around with drivers (and a reinstall from scratch), my Nova 500 does indeed seem to behave under Win7 with 6GB Smile Remote still doesn't work, though, and have no idea why..
Erm... Right. OK, just for future generations, the IR receiver for the Nova-T-500 IS DIFFERENT. God knows in what way, and Satan knows why, but it is, and thank <insert random deity here> I managed to find it after five years in a box under the stairs, plugged it in and it works.

New to Windows 7 - the UAC thing is driving me a little nuts... Do you have an easy way to run all install/setup as admin apart from running NPVR as Administrator from the Start menu? I couldn't figure out why my password change for the web interface wasn't taking. Wink I'm logged in as an admin user, so I thought that would be enough - though it seems not.

Running NPVR from the system tray (i.e. not explicitly as admin) seems to add recordings all OK - but should I always be running NPVR as admin when doing normal stuff like adding things to the schedule?

& if so, is there anything less clunky than a desktop shortcut/pin with 'Run as Admin' set?

You shouldnt need to do that. I'm not aware of any reason people would need to run NPVR as admin. It doesnt attempt to write to protected registry settings, or directories (unless you set the data directory to somewhere that wasnt accessable by a regular user account).

Hmmm... well NPVR didn't install without running the installer as admin. NPVR writeable files by default go into the Public user account. The password change problem for the web interface is reproducible (have to start NPVR as admin for it to change the password). I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

perms all look ok - I am an administrator:

You can turn UAC off, the next time you get a warning there should be a link named something like "change the warning level" or something like that. If you set it to the bottom and have Admin priv. at your normal account you should not be bothered anymore. That's what I always do on new installations Wink

To change the web password effectively you do have invoke UAC to restart the recording service which stops and restarts a new web server under the local system account. For a server this makes sense to me, disabling UAC to restart services seems like bad form.

Running the install should automatically prompt to run as administrator, like pretty much other other installer. I just double checked here, and it definitely prompts me to go into administrative mode.

Have you maybe disabled UAC on your machine? If so, then maybe this is a factor.

That is fine, and doesnt need any administrative privileges.

What exactly happens for you? The web server password should no different any other settings, ie it's just another string written to the config.xml. You will need to use the shortcuts to restart the recording service though.

Yeah - there is some settings that would need the recording service to be restarted, and when you use the shortcut that the NPVR installer created for this, it should auto-prompt to run as administrator. ie, no need to disable UAC for this.

UAC is enabled with the default setting. When I installed NPVR the first time & yes I did let it escalate its privileges during the install - the recording service wouldn't stop & start. I uninstalled & found this thread the 2nd post saying "If you have UAC enabled you should run all installation/setup as Admin." & reinstalled running the installer as administrator via a right click from windows explorer & it all worked fine.

Ok - now I'm getting confused. In order for the web passwd to change, the web service needs to be restarted which requires a manual restart of the recording service? Maybe that's been my problem all along. Wink
