YAYAYAYA!! i had a vga to component adapter that i built when i had only vga outputs on all my pc's, but it didnt work vga to component because vga is RGB (i think?) and the TV is ypbr (something like that) but DVI is apparently ypbr, because a DVI to VGA converter then my VGA to component cable , WORKS !!! on my 480i component ypbr TV. (this is my x1300 dvi card)

ok now that i let my joy out, i can explain. that was to test if my ATI 5850 in my computer could connect to my tv, as the 5850 doesnt have svideo or composite(only DVI, hdmi, mini display port). so now i can try my tv tuner in that comp. as now i have a way to connect that comp to the TV!!!!

YAYAYA im so excited when things go my way!!

(yes i found that a little creepy too)

This thread has answers that are really *STUPID*. It's no where close to being an efficient work flow. Why on earth should you have to transcode with the capture card can lower it's frame rate? You are creating more work for the computer to do, unnecessarily. Where is that logic coming from? It should be a setting in the software, if not already there.

I can't think of any dependancy that would prevent such a setting to be there, other than "we don't want to do it".

What is stupid is commenting on an 5 1/2 year old thread when HD was not as ubiquitous as it is today. At the time analog and SD recordings were normal and not all PC's could do HD or H264 now we assume they are capable. In the current world transcoding doesn't have to by software, there is software that uses h/w h264 and h265 encoding using modern video chips.

For transcoding options, the only digit card that does HD transcoding is the HDHR extend and while it is true you can't change the quality you can reduce the default quality and NextPVR supports that. You can configure NextPVR to lower the bit rate on the HDPVR if you choose. I record at 2.5GB an hour so I don't see any value in reducing it.

Before NextPVR GBPVR did allow various h/w analog bit-rates but the reality is most people used higher bit-rate then broadcast With cheap 4TB drives saving on bit rates on SD makes no sense.

The attack was on the stupid suggestions, and time has not changed that. The whole thought process to suggest such a thing is wholly backwards and fast-forwarding to today does not change it.

I found this thread in a google search. If it is that out of date, perhaps it should be deleted.

I too was looking to do what the original OP was asking, and the software does not offer any configuration in it's interface to do so. In that regard the thread is current, and my comments still valid.

I did find what I was looking for by hacking the config.xml. Nice interface, but not resorting to needless transcoding.

At the end of the day:

If you're recording with a digital tuner, you'll get a copy of whatever bitrate and resolution etc the broadcaster sent. This type of device has no encoder hardware, so no capability to adjust the resolution/bitrate for you.

If you're recording with analog tuner (or an HDMI/Component capture device like an HDPVR/Colossus), these have encoder hardware, and you can tweak the NextPVR config files to adjust the resolution and bitrate you'll get from recordings of this type.

The reality is that most people don't get care about this type of thing, and just recordings to happen reliably. Since most people use digital tuners these days, there was no point cluttering up the UI with quality settings that would only apply analog recordings. The previous incarnation of the app (GBPVR), had a quality setting when scheduling recordings, but nearly everyone just left it on 'default'. So...for a cleaner interface all analog recordings are considered to be 'default' quality in NextPVR, with sensible defaults that'll give decent quality recordings, but the config file can be used to tweak the defaults if you need to.
