Thanks for the tips. I am trying to avoid Win7 as this machine did not seem up to it when I tried it a while back. In Media Center, everything was choppy. Seemed to me that this was because everything, including LiveTV, was buffered to disk and the machine just couldn't keep up. With ArcSoft, LiveTV is NOT buffered to disk.

Where does one find EVR or Try VMR9 Custom or FSE? Thanks.

Exactly what kind of hardware are you running? Most computers works better with W7.

Attached is a report from my computer using Everest to give the low-down... Basically, it is a P4 at 2.8GHZ with 2G RAM and a 256M nVidia video card.

if upgrading to Windows 7 is an option for you, you'll be much happier with the way video playback works.

In trying different renderers, I find that VMR9 FSE is clearly best. For MPEG-2 decoders, my choices are disabled (clearly NOT what I want), Nero DVD decoder, ArcSoft Video Decoder, and Nero Video Decoder. This last choice seems best in terms of delivering the most smooth video.

However, now I am having sound problems. Generally, things start out ok but within a short time (less than 20 seconds) sound usually drops out entirely only to occasionally stutter back now and then for a second or two. My choices for MPEG-1 Audio are disabled, MPEG Audio Decoder, ArcSoft Audio Decoder, Nero Digital Audio Decoder, and ArcSoft MPEG Audio Decoder. None of the selections here seem to make a difference. For AC3 Audio the choices are: disabled, ArcSoft Audio Decoder, Nero Digital Audio Decoder, and ArcSoft MPEG Audio Decoder. Nothing here seems to make any difference either.

Finally, NPVR seems to always start in full screen now. Didn't before but now it does. I guess it recalls the setup when it is exited and I exited in full screen. The general option is not set for this and toggling it on/off makes no difference. I cannot seem to find a way to exit full screen once it is engaged. Maybe a keyboard shortcut? Pressing Escape doesn't do anything (but return me to the main menu). Is there a list of keyboard commands for NPVR such as channel up/down, volume up/down, pause, start? I am sure there must be but I haven't found them yet.

Thanks for all the time and help!

alt-enter on the keyboard should get you back to windowed mode.

"VMR9 FSE" or "VMR9 FullScreen Exclusive mode" is always fullscreen.

Duh! Obviously, I am quite new to all of this. I was just going to reply that alt-enter just makes the screen go blank!

regards audio, I just installed AC3Filter and, at least in its default configuration, makes no difference.
