Mine was a recommended update which I usually take, not optional and not important. Checking psycik's original link it is a performance related which is why I want but I expect it could help IE 10 when it arrives. I expect these are backports from Win8.

There's also an ongoing discussion about this update and the effects it is having over at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r2804890...orm-update

It looks like anyone that installed IE10 got the update forced on them without consent. Sad

- I identified what I believe is the problem file msmpeg2vdec.dll (mine was in Windows\SysWOW64)
- recovered the old version from explorer
- changed the owner of the file from TrustedInstaller to Administrator
- gave Administrator Full control
- renamed the file
- copied in the old version

Code:
Directory of  C:\Windows\SysWOW64\msmpeg2vdec*

13/07/2009  20:15       2,134,016  msmpeg2vdec.dll
04/01/2013   1:11       2,284,544  msmpeg2vdec.new

After this h264 files play in NextPVR

Martin

Thanks Martin copied this file from a machine that had not received the update and your solution worked

You could also right click on the file msmpeg2vdec.dll and Restore Previous Version, it should find the old one, so you can copy it somewhere else if needed.

I have now discovered that reverting msmpeg2vdec.dll back to an earlier version causes Mezzmo the streaming software that I use to stutter, therefore reverted back to current version and changed H264 decoder to Ffdshow .

My restore process survived patch Tuesday, which is good news. Later this week it's on to the IE 10 upgrade

Some observations while dealing with a fresh Windows install (and all the bloody updates):

- if you don't install the platform update but do install IE10, then you end up with the update too
- if you uninstall the update (in an attempt to keep the decoder working with NPVR), then you lose IE10 too

So basically Martin's restore-the-older-version tweak is the only sure-fire way to keep everything (and have everything working)

I'll make my note to backup the file before doing updates

The real issue IMHO is NextPVR relies on the MS MPEG 2 Demux component and all the other DS player apps that I tried use a splitter with a decoder instead which continues to work.
