I used TSReader (from http://www.coolstf.com/tsreader/), and a couple of utilities I've developed in house over the years.

My Visio TV is getting much more, so perhaps it is a hardware limitation of the older HDHR3-US box I am using.
Are you sure your visio TV isn't looking up listings from the internet? 12 hours is pretty much in line with what's normal for North American ATSC broadcasts. I wouldn't think it'd be the HDHR limiting this.

I also see only 12 to maybe 24 hours of listings for any channel I look at with tsreaderlite... however what about the descriptions? tsreaderlite shows me descriptions for just about every program, but when configure the same channels in nextpvr to use the ATSC epg data, I get show titles only.

while I do say people really shouldn't bother with the ATSC epg data, if npvr is going to support it then it ought to do it as well as possible.

I have done some work to add descriptions this morning. It's not quite working yet, but it's close.

The reason it hasn't been doing descriptions up to now is the due the painful way they don't send descriptions with the EPG data in the ATSC streams. The main EPG data only contains the channel/times/title. The extended text is elsewhere in the stream, and the approach they've used makes it hard to tie them together. It's designed around a system where the system lists what's on, then the user selects one of the shows to see the details, then it waits for (up to) a couple of seconds until the description comes by in the stream.

I'm now collecting the separate descriptions, and just looking for the best way to join them up with the exist EPG data.

oh, I see... I thought it was just a recently introduced bug, as I could've sworn I'd gotten descriptions in npvr when I tested this some years ago. Obviously I didn't.

(as an aside, I do wonder whether it wouldn't be less trouble for all concerned if you just turned off the ATSC EPG support altogether... all it ultimately does is produce user frustration, fussing, support requests about which nothing can really be done, and sometimes even a few arguments.... the final answer is always "use schedules direct" anyway.)

Yeah, I hear you. I've considered this several times. I think it's worth leaving there though.

Perhaps change the default for ATSC then to 3 minutes. I loaded a full 1 min. ts from tscapture into tsreaderlite and only a few hours showed up. Of course that could be the HDHR filtering too.

If you increase <EPGScanSeconds> in config.xml, does it make any difference to the few hours that show up?

here if I tune any channel with TSReaderLite, I get the first few hours of EPG data almost instantly, with it filling out to 12 or 24 hours within just a few more seconds. The descriptions take a little bit longer, but never even close to an entire minute. I've left channels running for 5 minutes and haven't seen any further change in the data.

I suppose how much EPG data to broadcast and how frequently to broadcast it is up to the individual station, but what I see here certainly doesn't suggest that running for more than 60 seconds would change anything (after all, this data is meant to be captured live by a TV while the user is waiting). Of course going longer wouldn't matter much for the unattended overnight epg update, but it would make user-initiated updates excruciatingly long.

I was doing my testing on a station with a week's data. The first 3 hours is quick, the 12 hours isn't bad more than a minute though. In TSReader which the EIT and ETT counts. It takes me up to 1k of ETT to see a good guide.
