I found the code. It is not complete but allows you to script what you want it to download. It connects to a ftp client and downloads it. I can not take a look at it today since I need to go home to avoid the tropical storm about to hit me.

Stuff that needs to be added.
Export of a current snapshot of a machine as a xml file.
detection if the user has already seen it using rectracker.
When a file is completed downloading it will be added to rectracker.
and probably a bunch of other things.

This would be awesome! I've been downloading certain shows from other countries simply because they don't broadcast them here. I would be great to just be able to start retrieving them right after broadcast.

Let me know if I can help with this. I'll be willing to be a client or set up an ftp server or something.

Though pay attention to grover_km's warning about the legality of this in some countries. P2P is a grey area on what is allowed to be shared.

Cheers,
Colin.

I'm all for 'fair use', and in the same way I can lend a video tape to my brother, I'd like to be able to share a show electronically.

I think it'd be legally messy to connect up to a mass P2P network and share your files with hundreds of other users, but personally think its ok to have system where you can manually add friends and family to your own personal share pool. After all, I could lend a tape these same friends and family. It'd also get a lot less attention.

Of course you should all add me to your share pool so I can watch anything I like...

LOL.

Of course, when I suggested some sort of "trust" criteria based upon length of membership x number of posts, I obviously had in mind a threshold that was equal to my values -1 in both cases....

I'd be really cool if we could tie into the I2P network. Won't change the legality issues, but it would make it a lot harder to hold anyone accountable Wink

# of posts would work for me. Smile

the key would be building the infrastructure for private groups.

ftp is probably safer than p2p.

Key word being "private" if your number of posts is what sets the standard ;-) You'd be like... three people? Big Grin

hehe. Ok maybe not that private. Smile The number of posts is not a great indicator. There are a lot of active members. It is nice for times when someone missed a show it would be nice to get a list of all shows available in a cluster of clients

Or when your dad comes to visit, and leaves it running, and maxes out your HD, and the shows you want are missing 15 min, and you need that episode to put 3 more on a DVD in order, and now you have to keep all 4 for 4 more months until that episode rolls around again...
