Just to close this off. I put SP2 on but it made no difference. But what I did find in the process was that the support for my network card that is included with Vista is cr*p. Actually, intel say the card is incompatible with vista, but microsoft supply a buggy driver anyway!

Anyhow, I've now rebuilt my spare development server with vista and it's all lovely - no stuttering to be seen (or heard).

Once again thanks to all that have helped me to resolve this.

I promised to upload a sample of a BBC HD broadcast with the audio subtitleing. This is it.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1PLTJ0SY

The BBC broadcast two BBC HD channels. One simply refered to as BBC HD, the other is BBC HD (AC3). This sample is from the latter, but both have audio subtitleing over the top.

The sample has a brief subtitle at the beginning saying "Then she, Lizzy and Helen turn and walk away".

Thanks that sample helped on two counts, first my logic wasn't quite right, so I have updated mvpmcx2l.7z once again now you should just hear nature at the beginning.

It's in interesting sample for other reason, this is the first 1440 x 1080 HD sample I've found. It is valid (the pixel size is different) I just wanted to confirm it works.

Odd, I though those ITV HD ones "This service is currently unavailable" were also 1440 x 1080 ??

Sorry you're right Martin (and thanks for being the first too). Without audio it wasn't interesting enough for me to check the contents.

Tested that new patch now Martin, works like a charm. Let me know if a larger sample would be useful for anything and I'll upload one overnight.

Thanks as always for your rapid attention.

Martyn.

Is the BBC HD test card with 5.1 audio of any use http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2...the_h.html (although I'm just a 2 channel stereo user).
It's supposed to pop up every 90 minutes during the daytime when a rolling promo is broadcast.

Thanks Martin, I have that sample already, and it is 1440x1080 so now you weren't the first after all. Don't confuse 2 channel with AC3, mvpmcx2 downmixes all AC3 content to 2 channel anyway. I'd prefer to default to AC3 but several stations leave the stream on with no audio outside North America.

That reminds me I have to check with Syabas about licensing, to see about enabling enhanced Pro Logic.

Sorry I missed this earlier, no I don't think I need a bigger sample right now,
I wanted a few full show samples for com skip testing and although I thought I would need h264 files, the logic for standard mpeg seems to be working as equally well.

I do still find it amazing the we think of 100 MB as small. I am old enough to remember jumping up to an ATI 9600 baud modem from 300 baud and it was like getting warp speed.

I am very easily confused by the intricacies of digital sound/video. When I first saw mention of UK HD using AC3 audio I had visions of having to buy some expensive AV amplifier or somesuch.

I have noticed that the "normal" audio channel is quieter than the narrative one. Unsure as to whether this is the broadcaster, your downmixing, or my TV.

I remember downloading some BBS software from the US at 300 baud - very expensive! and my old BBS ended up with 3 x 20mb scsi disks in a line and that held the lot, software, messages, downloads, everything.
All running multiuser TurboDos in 64k of memory. Ah, when I bought my first assembler and could stop coding by hand and guessing jump offsets (bliss).
