Personally, I think Eventghost is the way to go, or a similar external program. Yes, it's another listener but I think that's a positive thing. Because it's external, you can use EG to do things outside of your viewing program like kill the program if it gets hung and restart it, run another program in the background on command like updating the EPG or commanding an X10 device to cycle the power, etc.
Plus, since EG is listening to HTTP commands, you can customize your web page such as the skin with icons posted earlier by Antmannz, use a 3rd party program like EG for Android, or heck even write your own. Then in EG you can set the buttons to do whatever you like. You can make those Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow buttons do whatever you can dream up, even macros with multiple commands.
Didn't mean to become a shill for Eventghost, but it's really powerful and with it you just don't need the functionality added into NPVR, IMO.
