If you want to talk about disgusting, let's talk about Twinkies...

Actually, lets talk about Casu marzu instead.
Derived from Pecorino, casu marzu goes beyond typical fermentation to a stage most would consider decomposition, brought about by the digestive action of the larvae of the cheese fly Piophila casei. These larvae are deliberately introduced to the cheese, promoting an advanced level of fermentation and breaking down of the cheese's fats. The texture of the cheese becomes very soft, with some liquid (called lagrima, from Latin for "tears") seeping out. The larvae themselves appear as translucent white worms, about 8 millimetres (0.3 in) long.[1] When disturbed, the larvae can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in). Diners hold their hands above the sandwich to prevent the maggots from leaping into their eyes. Those who do not wish to eat live maggots place the cheese in a sealed paper bag. The maggots, starved for oxygen, writhe and jump in the bag, creating a "pitter-patter" sound. When the sounds subside, the maggots are dead and the cheese can be eaten.

give me squares of orange cheese any day.

As a fan of Marmite I was following this thread closely Big Grin

"Soylent Green" jogged a memory but I admit I had to google it to refresh my tired old mind Wink Ahh cannibalism, is it wrong......?

Haggis is actually very delicious though very rich, most meat eaters that eat it not knowing what went into it find it so. It is when they know the contents that many get put off!

But gEd's Casu Marzu surely has to top it all!

I am not sure that maggots jumping in a bag (or out of the bag protecting my eyes from them) would ever be a number one choice chez the dinner table @ steeb's place.

Martin great pic, but of course that only offers the shoulder.... Why is there not a cut on offer of the Buttock? Which is essentially the Ham! Anyone for Buttock Wink ?

But it is of course great that the divide is nothing like it was. I was adding turmeric and cumin to my 7 month old daughter's courgette today. Am sure I wouldn't have been doing that in blighty a couple of decades ago!

cheers all

Perfect you lead me right into my favourite line in the HHGTTG

noooo, you don't want to go adding turmeric to a small babies diet. think about it.

Oooh gEd,

I am am!

I worry about these things most diligently

I have 7 different books on weaning babies. And each one has a different story to tell.

I am just watching what comes out the other end and for any adverse reactions!

Apparently turmeric and cumin are the least spicy of the spicy products.

Some say Onion and Tomatoes are fine. Others don't! Hmmmm.

Of course the asnwer is 42 or is it Wink Ask the mice

I have recently taken to paraphrasing HHGTTG by saying "almost but not quite entirely unlike coffee" whenever I drink coffee outside my house, especially in Starbuck$.

Hiya gEd,

If it were only Starbuck$. But it isn't is it? Costa, Nero, then all the small coffee shops. Big Grin

I am so old I forget which is which, and which small twist on a coffee they are offering me. But now and then I do like a coffee.

Which of course brings me back to Turmeric in my daughter's courgette and how the world is changing so fast! For the better in some ways.... Though I may not be introducing Maccie D's etc for quite a while yet......

We are talking coffee here in the UK but of course it was introduced to us. Not a native plant.

But I am so pleased we have it.

OK forget the tabacco but Potatoes too? Or is that a myth? That they were brought to us by intrepid explorers?

I do kind of think I would have missed the native Purple Carrots but Orange coloured ones do OK!

And of course Marmite where this thread started. I am a fan!

I am trying to "Don't Panic"

"But the plans were on display . . ."
"On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."
"That's the display department."
"With a torch."
"Ah, well the lights had probably gone."
"So had the stairs."
"But look, you found the notice, didn't you?"
"Yes," said Arthur, "yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard."

cheers

Aaah - coffee - certainly not what you get in most of those chains/franchises.

The first (and last) time we went to costafortune, Mrs ACTCMS was heard to say "This p1$$ would get coffee banned..."
