The most memory intensive stage is when you're updating the EPG, but I wouldn't expect it to be using more than about 1GB.

Channels are coming from a HDHomeRun tuner. There is 108 channels added in nextpvr, 133 available from the tuner.

Any particular screen, or activity happening at the time?

This is while there are 3 ongoing recordings, and a recording being played on android TV though UIclient.

Situations like this were common on the windows install and as i say, that never even touched 1GB (and i'm including the separate ffmpeg processes)

The only difference here is that there is no hardware acceleration. This should only make the CPU work harder i would have thought, and it is not reaching 30%

I can try disabling the thumbnails, but thats going to take time to report back for the existing recordings to finish and more to start.
Yeah, I'd try without thumbs enabled.

How ffmpeg works in Windows bare metal and Linux VM will be quite different too.  Sub does reduce the CPU but can't control memory.

I dont think a 60Mb/s 4k H265 video is comparable to 3 x 5Mb/s H264 streams. Thumbs and timing files are almost essential.

What I am saying is ffmpeg memory is not controlled. If they are essential try bare metal or queue them.

Still worth trying without these, so you can determine if that is the cause of your problem.

Don't know if this is any clue for you. One of the 3 recordings just finished. There was a drop from 5.7GB to 5.62, before going back up to 5.7GB. Its like theres some other process trying to steal all the memory. When you sort by memory useage, it is not ffmpeg thats using the memory, its the actual NPVR server.

I know sub tries and manage thumbs CPU maybe that impacts things.

A proper test would be to see what happens when you kill all fffmpeg tasks, you can regenerate thumbs via the UI.

Just stopped all recordings. all ffmpeg procs gone. memory usage still there. ffmpeg /thumb generation is not the issue here.

Just restarted the VM. Thumb generation disabled. Memory usage is just going up and up. No processes expect for NPVR.

Try bare metal too and maybe give NextPVR 2GB.
