I don't like thumbnails myself, but most remotes now only have 5 to 10 keys with limited skipping so your wife (and me!) are not in the majority.

Most new STB's don't have component so be prepared for this if your legacy devices are replaced.  There are HDMI to component adapters too as an option.

Thank you Martin, that guide will take care of most and maybe even all of my wife's UI concerns!

Just one question for now: In the Recordings section, the subsection "While playing a recording" gives the same remote-control key for fast-forward and short skip forward, and similarly for rewind and short skip back. How will the remote know whether you want it to rewind vs. skip back 10 seconds, or fast-forward vs. skip forward 10 seconds?

The are probably wrong on the wiki, I never use FF or RW since that isn't a feature of UI clients. Plus after thumbs were released the guide got screwed around. Feel free to experiment mapping your own remote, there are distinct keys for short and long skips and FF/RW.

OK, that's one more thing to learn (mapping a remote). Smile  When the time comes I should probably buy new ones since I definitely don't want to mess with our WMC remotes.

I'll look around the forum to see what makes/models others are using.

I think the MCE remote skipping out of the box, it is the times and the action on left and right that need looking at. That is one reason the image for skip needs looking at you can skip with left right too when there are no thumbs.

I plugged into the NextPVR PC a non-WMC remote (generic Windows remote) and receiver I had lying around and tried the buttons. It seems to work best when a program (live or recorded) is showing on the screen. Skip forward here is at 60 seconds, skip back is 30 seconds. So we have something.

Will borrow a WMC remote and receiver from one of our machines to see how well it works with NPVR "out of the box." But I've noticed that when I open the TV Guide in the NPVR Client, it always shows the lowest-numbered channels; WMC shows you the channels around the last channel that was tuned. And when in the guide I don't seem to be able to directly enter the desired channel (e.g., 586), but instead I have to laboriously keep scrolling down the listings a screenful at a time until I reach the channel. This happens whether I use the remote or the PC's keyboard. Is there a way to make it so that you can enter the number of the channel you want to go to?

NextPVR guide always sorts at the top. If your remote has number keys yes you should be able to enter them (try with the keyboard to confirm)

In the NextPVR client, you can press 'enter' or 'ok' after typing a channel number. I'm guessing you just typed the number and didn't press enter.
