After reading Sub's post I installed the trial of Start8 - I had already got W8 to move through to the desktop & Start NPVR on startup using a com file, but it was taking about 30 secs from the Metro screen opening.
At last W8 makes sense, It is now a good operating platform for a HTPC - I didn't really want a mobile phone with a 50" screen
Interesting price $4.99 - worth buying, not worth hacking! What with all the abuse that the modern interface is getting - Stardock could be about to make millions.

It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives
