W7 H.264 update out today

Indeed it is and working - but not available for SD content, that's what threw me.

"It's not available for MPEG2 on Win8" is more accurate. SD on our New Zealand DVB-T system uses H.264.

Patch is working perfectly for me. In fact, it's the only video decoder working for me!

No more watching recordings in VLC! Hooray! Thanks!

I was previously unable to get video, or audio, or even record the stream on several channels (such as Film4) and this patch appears to have fixed that.

Yes, this patch was released after 2.6.2.

I gather that many users did not install the W7 platform update to avoid its H.264 ramifications. I've wondered if it might be important to install the platform update before installing Current Patch 2?

XP doesn't have that decoder, so no patch is necessary nor possible.

The Microsoft decoder was first released only on some top of the range Vista versions before it was available on Windows 7/8and was never available on XP.

I am running Vista Business which does not have the decoder so I copied the two files msmpeg2adec.dll & msmpeg2vdec.dll from Vista Ultimate but cannot register either. I get 0x80004005 error which seems to be some sort of "Access denied" error but get it as Admin. Should it be possible to register these decoders or are MS stopping these files registering on Windows versions the files were not originally supplied with?
