To my knowledge the setting "Use out of process digital recording" is still available in NPVR 3.1.1.
Have a look at http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?....Recording for the documentation where to find it.
The other setting "Use background recording service" is gone and replaced by an Disk Space option for recording.
Brgds.

The change log seems to have co-mingled the description of the checkbox. The "Use Background Recording Service" checkbox is gone, because the Recording Service has been mandatory since about NPVR 1.5.36 or something like that, and the checkbox has actually done nothing since then. In the early days, if NextPVR couldn't find a recording service to talk to, it would spin up it's own.

The "Use out of process digital recording" checkbox is still there, and still does what it's supposed to do.

Still don't quite get what that actually does - spin up a new process for recordings? But the recording service is a separate process anyway...

I am a Newbie user in the UK and can confirm experiencing the same issue this morning i.e Null recording and PC not closing down. I have just disabled "Use out of process digital recording" and will report back.

It spins up a process called "NDigitalHost" to actually do the nitty-gritty work of running the (digital) tuner, and uses a separate one for each tuner. This way if something goes wrong with the tuner, it doesn't crash the main NRecord process. For awhile it's been able to recover from full crashes this way (where the NDigitalHost would actually throw an exception and exit), and new in this release it can also recover from a hang where the NDigitalHost just stops responding but remains stuck in memory. NRecord will just spin up a new NDigitalHost for that tuner, and go on like nothing happened.

Yesterday Morning had this happen again so not just the update EPG during live TV Setting. Restarted the Recording Service, but last night had a recording fail with the Tuner failed to lock a signal comment.
I haven't had one of these for months. I have realized that there has been a lot of things done to the Computer recently - new NPVR, New Win 8.1, New drivers etc. - all without a cold reboot.
It looks as though one of the Tuners may have become dis-respondent (I know the feeling Big Grin )
So done the deed (plug out of the wall for 10 mins) and will see what happens.

I presume using out of process recording is the preferred way to operate still.
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh

Hi,

I'm getting this issue as well. Neither altering the out of process setting, or realtime EPG download settings seem to work for me. Hopefully something can be sorted soon. My epg sequence is quite complicated, with XMLTV Gui, over the air and that freeview XML update tool (I forget the name).

pretty much the same for me.
As well as having the c:\nullxxxx (or whatever) status problem, I also had "strictly" fail to record last friday as the recording service couldn't get a lock on the tuner. (It's goes without saying how much sh1t I got into for that....)

I had upgraded the BG3620 drivers from 8.x to 9.x at around the same time, so it is always possible that they caused the problem. However, I have not had the problem since I just restart the recording service after loading the EPG.

I've been snowed under with day-job stuff the last few days, so haven't investigated it any further yet.

It's the weekend now though, so I should be able to make some progress today.
