that does sound interesting. I am wondering how long it takes to download a typical show.

I'm hoping to get that info from this concept test. I'll post results.

err... i do not now anything about this 'broadcast flag law' deepBlueC mentioned... but i don't think it allows to share it within a trusted group containing members from _outside_ of USA...?

sometimes, a significant amount of time passes before a show is aired here (here=german part of europe). and (even worse) they are dubbed in german *g*

am i allowed to get the 'original' version before the show was aired in my country? (ok.. in switzerland, downloading of e.g. mp3s or movies from p2p programs for personal use is allowed. the law states, that the person who _shares_ copyrighted content has to take care the copyright is not breached. as long as you don't share anything, they can't get you).

I thought the broadcast law was shot down? One question is does grouper kept track of what users search for? Or is that encrypted as well?

In an ideal scenario they can not see what we share (with encryption in the client) so cant prove we may or may not have violated any copyrights.

I see this as fair use. If I miss a show and want to borrow it from a friend whom copied it is that allowed? The answer is probably - sometimes.

Supposedly the whole thing is encrypted. I've got someone uploading a 275 MB (test) file from the UK at 21 KB/s and it's estimated at about 4 hours to complete. That's using a little under 1/2 of my available upload bandwidth (48 KB/s -or as the cable company puts it - 384 Kb/s). It looks like the software will allow you to throttle the connection so that you don't totally choke all of your upstream.

Personally I'm just interested in viewing shows are NOT EVER going to be broadcast in the US and aren't for sale on DVD. Shows like Survivor UK or Australian Big Brother etc. I wonder about the legality of trading those type of shows?

Personally I think that the MPAA really doesn't care about a few people trading shows - they are more interested in sidelining file sharing technologies that could impact their revenues. The whole torrent thing comes to mind - it was getting to the point where you could have a client automatically check for shows, download them and have them ready for viewing the morning after it aired - commercial free. They had to choice but to go after them - this had the potential to change the way people watch tv shows - and the network was cut out of the loop.

Canadian law, as convoluted as it is, allows for "timeshifting" of any medium you can legally receive in your home, providing the content is unmodified, and is not distributed for profit, nor is stored on permanent media. This includes sharing the content with others.
In simpler terms, I can record anything I like, share it with anyone I want, providing I do not do three things:
a) Burn it to permanent medium such as DVDR or CDR (however erasable media is OK, such as RW's, VHS tape, hard drives, etc.), and;
b) I don't edit the commercials, or any other portion, beforehand, and;
c) I don't charge for the content. I can charge a nominal fee for the disk/tape though, and I can also charge for my time to burn/record, and any shipping and handling fees.

It is interesting. I agree the MPAA probably does not care that much. Since the intent is not to copy every newly released dvd, shrink it and broastcast it to everyone. They are not losing their revenue stream. Since the commercials are still in there (most of the time Smile ).

I occasionally miss a show since I only had 1 tuner. I just bought a second to make that a very unlikely, unless I do not get that channel.

Reboot do you ever miss a show having 5 tuners?? If you have some pay channels you are definitely going to be the most favored member in any file sharing cluster.

I only miss what I forget to schedule, specials, or movies.
I get 99% of what I have to get for the family, as everyone has their favourite stuff, which always seems to be on when we're not home.
I work from 14:30-01:00 4 days a week, so I miss all the evening stuff.
My wife works days, so she misses all her Buffy, Relic Hunter, Earth 2, and Lost World.
My kids will be going to school, so they'll miss all the animated stuff they like.

I don't have any pay, just extended cable, and things get archived to disk frequently, just to make room for more recordings.
I currently have 3 x 250gig drives for storage and serving (over the LAN), and my OS resides on a 160, partitioned for OS and backups.
All the kids stuff is transcoded to avi, as they only watch on their computer monitor, thus served over the LAN. The wife and I share the PVR. I do all the work, she does all the watching Wink
BTW, My wife's and my kid's computers also have capture cards, and their own gbpvr setups, so they can record and watch whatever I don't get.
In total, 5 computers, 7 capture cards, roughly 3TB of storage.
One day, I just may get an MVP to play with...
