The option has been there since build 14 :p Just change the login username to 'autologin', and it won't ask you to login unless you ask for the config tab.
See the Wiki Page for more info.

You would then start vlc on the client to capture the network stream.

This works great when done manually, to be able to do it automatically would be truely awesome!

At the, all the web admin is doing is streaming the file that is on the computer (via HTTP). So there's no transcoding or anything else going on. The bitrate required is the bitrate at which the recording was made.

The only reason VLC is recommended as a client is because both WiMP and WinAmp refuse to start playing the stream until the entire file has downloaded. VLC will start playing immediatly, but you'll notice that it recalculates the time of the file as it plays. You might be able to get WiMP/WinAmp to work, but I doubt with seeking. You probably need a full streaming server for that.

I have no problem streaming with VLC over my 802.11a which is slower than G. I don't use G, although I have it, since my cordless phone knocks it out all the time. You should be able to stream over your G network without problem....unless there is a lot of interfearence.

Have you tried VLC to see if it works for you?

Just a comment on recent additions to this thread. I think the purpose of my comments has been correctly interpreted. We need to look forward to the future and interpolate how these functions might be used. Take a travelling salesman needing to keep up to date with Tv recordings back home. He is going to want to manage his recordings when on the road and probably want to view programs that have been recorded. Web Admin is the tool - lets not get hung up by the name - if it is a problem for some then maybe it should be renamed. If it works why not use it to stream video. The increasing speed of internet access means programs like VLC will easily do the job, it is working for me today.
I suggest that any wiki should point new users to the capability of VLC. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that the purpose of "Play program" function on the "Manage Recordings" tab.

When I click on the play icon and tell the browser to launch vlc, nothing happens. However, if i copy the url and paste this into vlc, under network, http stream, it actually appears to work well !! (on low quality recordings at least). I didn't realise that this was the best way of doing until I just read the vlc guide to video on demand. This is on a b wireless network.

thanks

odd. If you try saving the .m3u file to disk, and then loading it with vlc as a playlist does it work?

When I installed VLC I took the option to associate file types. It may be that the .m3u types aren't associated with VLC on your box.

Ah, found the problem. it looks like the default mozilla VLC plugin doesn't work. I choose to open with "other" and located vlc.exe manually and it works great!
I can't believe how good the quality is over the wireless b network on my laptop.

I guess I had been approaching this a little half-ar5sed, not realising that the VLC client and the server would resize the file over http.

This is sooo cool guys, thanks for all your input.

One thing I would like to see added is an option to either download the programs through the web admin, or through a program like VLC. The problem for me is that I have never been able to get VLC to work while streaming, it acts likes it's going to play but no video or audio shows up and the counter just moves. However, playing it directly (accessing the file directly throught the network) VLC will play the exact same file.

KingArgyle: and if you just download the link that's in the .m3u file?
