Has anyone tried using vlc on a linux box?? My thought is to remaster a knoppix, mepis or feather linux cd to include the required packages and delete packages not needed. By doing this it might be possible to run frontend from a live cd or usb drive with above mentioned settings. Is this a possibility?? I will try to set this up on a mepis box I have.

oddworld14: as far as I know the important settings to change are: RecordingServiceLocation, DatabaseConnectionString and RecordingsDirectory. You have changed two so far. Try changing the DatabaseConnectionString too (to something like: 'Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source="\\207.246.177.226\gbpvr\gbpvr.mdb";User Id=admin;Password='

glb72: should work, there are far more non-windows platforms that vlc supports than windows based ones. You won't be able to use it as a front end though. The only supported front-ends to gb-pvr are gb-pvr itself and mvp's. mvp's seem to use a modified RFB protocol (used in VNC too, but mvp's and vnc are not compatible).

hey guys, i'm new to gbpvr just started playing with it over the last couple of days. have setup streaming networks on both windows and linux. VLC is a good piece of software but i found it unnecessarily complicated...i think a much easier options for you guys would be unrealmediaserver. This setup would take 5 mins at the most. basically what I am going to do (can't do it right now because i'm subject to university lan rules for another month or so) basically what i'd do is this.
- set the virtual roots of media server to the relevant gbpvr directories...one for dvds, music etc
run the server and use either the standalone client, or embedded players on a webpage to view/listen to the static content.

as far as live tv goes you just set it up under "live device" (or similar can't quite remember). and you can watch tv over the lan....i don't think it supports timeshift...but considering that this is not tailered software it could be considered a relative luxury.

- or have you thought about simply RDP'ing onto the server? - tho i dont know if that would work for video playback?.

anywhoo hope that was of at least interest if not help

I forgot to include some required configuration files, so I've made build 3b available for download which contains the missing files. (or you could have got them from the SoftwareRecorder package).

jquinlan Wrote:Try http://www.orb.com its now free but only available to US. It has realtime transcoding of media and a web interface. Have not tried it myself but thier sample pages work well.

Has any one tried out ORB yet? Wondering if I could use this to view recordings from my home machine while visiting the folks on vacation. I guess I could simply use the enhanced web interface and VLC to do the same.

I've used Orb and it works great for viewing shows from my server when I'm on the go. The only real limitation is your uplink bandwidth. Cable sometimes has only 300~400 kbps uplink. Orb will transcode to the best quality that it can for the bandwidth. Now, if you can to 2000kbps uplink, it will look great! Big Grin
