Question about Web Interface

I'm a little confused, does anyone know if it's possible to connect/ record to GBPVR from a computer outside my network. (I'd like to gain access to the same "localhost" page, or atleast the same interface.....so to connect from school, to my house) In otherwords be able to record things when i'm not home. I have a feeling i would need to setup a web address maybe? Any help would be great, Thanx.

This is easy enough to do with a decent router. You will need to set up a dynamic IP account. Most of the routers in the USA use dyndns.org. After you get a temporary dns name to point to your router with dynamic IP address, than all you have to do is open a hole in the firewall of your router and point it to your GBPVR PC (by IP address). It is usually best if you assign a static IP address to your PC, but you may be able to configure this at the router.

Here is where you can get a DDNS account to set up an address so that you can find your router on the Internet from some other location. Lots of good reading material there.

Your router should have some decent documentation for forwarding a port so that you can access the Web Admin. If you need help with that, post the brand and model of your router.

Hey David, Thanks for the quick response That seems simple enough. I figured i'd have to do something with the router, but didn't know about dydns or whatever you said. I'm from the US actually- just really tired man. But looking back, it does look like broken english Unless you're talking about computer lingo being a foreign language? Come to think of it, that makes alot more sense.....ha

Yup.... fortunately, there are (several) ways ... here's two :

1. More Expensive. Get a dedicated IP address from your IP and replace "localhost" with that name when externally accessing GBPVR or

2. Use a (free) service like dyndns.org to set up a Dynamic domain name which reolves the dynamic IP address from your IP to a static name you select at that free service.

For 2, if you have a router like a WRT54GS, 3rd Party firmware will let you choose one from a number of those free services, and it will do some of the work for you, but you need to set it up to forward the external request to your PC. Good reading for that is http://www.portforward.com.

well guys, Dydns seems like the way to go....but i'm not too good with port fowarding.....i know how to access my router config but thats about it, i have a linksys WRT54G i believe.

I have several Linksys routers, but not that model. There should be a tab for port forwarding. You would need to forward port 7647 (default port set in the GBPVR config for web admin) to your PC's IP address.

If you still need help, I'll download a manual for that model and give you a few more tips.

Dydns have a really good explanation of what you need to do to set it up.
The portforwarding site has settings of almost every router out there.

Have a read about it, take a crack at it, come back and ask as many Q's as you need when you get really really stuck and the WAF is approaching critical mass :-) (unless you ARE the wife, in which case we're stuck right there..)
