pvr150 picture quality

its giving me an error saying that "The specified file is not a registry script| you can only import binary registry files from within the registry editior" when i try it

like i mentioned before, if you guys recomend another peice of software, i'll try it out, i'm not stuck on only using GBPVR(ill likely still use it for TV but thats a different story)

Hi danIrl,

I own an ATI Theater 550 Pro capture card.

Something I've been meaning to mention is I've made a couple of adjustments beyond the video card which improved the overall sharpness:
1) Disable noise filtering on my ATI 550. I think this translates to disabling the spatial and temporal filters on the Hauppauge cards.
2) Set the encoder bitrate to 8Mb/s for liveTV (encoder pass-through settings in direct.ini) (I however use lower bitrates for recordings).

I suspect it is related to playback only and not capture.

. . . I got exactly same results as described in this forum and this is
preventing me to go further in my HTPC projects.

On my side, up to now, I tried on these two different setups:

1- I capture video using Hauppauge PVR-150 + GBPVR
1.1- I Burn resulting video on a DVD-R
1.2- I play this DVD using a Panasonic RP-56, plugged with component
cables into my Toshiba 57HX81

or

2- I capture video using Hauppauge PVR-150 + GBPVR (the same)
2.1- I transfer and play the file on my widescreen Toshiba laptop

. . . whenever I go through scenario #1 or #2, I always get the
exact and same symptoms described in this thread:

1- Very filtered details. Image so soft and different from original.
2- Bright parts of the picture appears surexposed.
3- Dark parts are exagereated: no more details into!
etc ...

So, for me, I have the opposite conclusion: even do the PVR-150 is
the "standard" in capture cards, its capture quality is faulty,
especially compared to other recording means.

I tried different sharpness configuration using the hauppauge tweaking
tool, but never succeeded to get the same result as the original.

I also tried to use a better bitrate, but it's never the same as
the original.

I just wanted to thank csy for all of his knowledge on this subject. After reading all of this thread and reading a thread on the fx5200 Ive been able to change the mpeg2 decoding from my fx5200 from a fuzzy muddy picture to a very sharp picture that looks just as good as the watching cable straight though the tv. I first tried using an older version of the forceware drivers:

The GPL Mpeg 1/2 -decoder

The AC3Filter for audio decoding
Nothing really improved, so I was worried that it was something to do with my pvr150. But as someone suggested in this thread, when I burn a show to a dvd the dvd looks very good. So next I tried dscaler and the picture really improved but I had a small studder every once in a while. Next I tried the purevideo codecs, the picture quality didn't improve too much but the sound quality definitely improved and the studder disappeared. Finally, I used all of csy's suggestions on the first page of this thread (upgrading to lastest forceware drivers, changing screen resolution....) and the picture really looks great now. 4) Disable TV-out scaling and anti-flicker. For ATI, enable "video mode", and for Nvidia set anti-flicker to zero (far left on slider).

I have a 9550, using Catalyst 7.3 drivers, and can't find "video mode" anywhere in the Catalyst Control Center . Has this been dropped from the latest ATI drivers?

Catalyst Control Centre (CCC) -> Advanced View
TV Properties -> Adjustments -> "Enable video mode" tick box

This will be greyed-out until you appropriately configure CCC display mode:
"Clone" mode and make "TV" the "main" display
Display resolution and refresh rate: 720x576@25i PAL or 720x480@30i NTSC
