Anyone else have the problem that sometimes the comercials on tv are louder than the tv show. Does anyone have a plugin that would keep the volume constant? Or even make the comercials quieter so I could go get some food, and when the sound comes back I know the tv is back?

edit: can someone move this to plugins? I put it in the wrong forum

Superb idea!! This has annoyed me for YEARS - I'd never even thought of the possability of using a PVR for this. Does comskip lite exist???Big Grin

I use comskip/comclean on recordings so I don't have to watch the commercials; that being said it would very cool to have when watching LiveTV or time shift.

Good idea! Smile

Why have the commercials at all?? You can pause if you need a bite to eat. Comskip already finds the commercials, and then they can be stripped right out using comclean or a comskip supported mpg editor/cutter.

I heard once that the commercial are not actually louder but have lots of compression that makes them seem louder. I don't know if I buy that as they sure seem loud to me. Can anyone confirm this? I guess I could watch a known loud commercial (Eharmony commercial come to mind) and check the levels versus 'regular' commercials.

Most TV, as with any other broadcast audio, is output at about 83% modulation...that is...the wave signal is 100%, and the audio carried on the wave is at 83% of max.
Commercials are recorded (and thus broadcast) at 100% modulation, thus appearing louder, even though the volume is the same.
Think of it as "Microphone Gain"...an option some will be familar with on certain equipment.
Output volume is the same, regardless of source, but input (recorded) volume uses 100% of the recordings bandwidth (on most commercials).
Clear as mud?
You can never have enough tuners!

Someone makes TV that does this.
It keeps the output at a certain decible level reguardless of the source.
Or that's what the commercial said.

commskip only works after the item has been recorded right? Or does it work on live-pasued tv now too? I haven't updated it in awhile so I dont know if there are any new features. So I guess no one has a plug-in for comercial sound yet huh?

It works during recording but you have to wait at least the time the commercials last(+ a little more), before you start watching.

I used to work with a guy that had worked in television as a VT Operator. The 'conspiracy theory' is, of course, that they deliberately ramp the volume up for the advert breaks but his explanation was that it was often simply down to the viewers' perception.

An example he gave would be if you're watching a period drama (e.g., set before the time of telephones, cars, aircraft etc) and you just have genteel folk having genteel conversations at a polite level.....FADE OUT to programme theme music (genteel string quartet)....CUE....Advert for Megadeth's latest album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get the idea? Big Grin

I've never really tested the idea out properley but admit that it often seems to work that way. If the programme I've been watching had Jean-Claude or Arnie letting loose several rocket launchers just before the commercial break then I wouldn't expect to notice any volume change in the adverts.

As nitrogen_widget said though, you can always get a TV with AGC or some other form of limiter - personally I hate the sound produced by this sort of system - everything seems to be quite flat.

Cheers,
Brian
