Hi There...

So let me get this straight! (Pardon me for dumbing this down, but I've never really got my head wrapped around this...)

AviSynth is a transcoder similar to ffmpeg or mencoder. '.avs' files are similar to '.bat' files (executable text file) that describe to AviSynth what to transcode, and how to do it...

So that means, that when a MVP tries to open an '.avs' file it is really telling the GB-PVR / MVP server to execute a Transcode, and the MVP is really playing the resulting, created MPG file...

And what your software does is it pre-sets or pre-configures those batch files to be specifically curtailed to individual transcodes... (Star Wars I might need different parameters than Robot Chicken)

Or am I all wrong?

I've been trying it. As far as I could fiddle out, GBPVR will only play .avs with the use of trans2mvp.exe. I couldn't get it to work with ffmpeg. trans2mvp.exe uses mainconcept encoder from the hauppauge mvp sw.
I guess you could use trans2mvp.bat with the right line for ffmpeg in it.
You're better with scripting than I am. The clue of this all is ofcourse in using the right avisynth script, to get really advantage of it, that is, to make it work better than ffmpeg alone.

Can the GB-PVR start a AVS natively? For example: Can I setup a Recorded MPG to be processed and oputput as an MPG, from within my main PVR machine, or only on an MVP...?

Afaik most mediaplayers, so GBPVR too will play .avs files.

Zehd, the Batch Scripter Software works fine with any version of GBPVR, because it is software that generates scripts for AviSynth (so not specific for GBPVR). You can put any kind of script you want in there. As long as you make it work for AviSynth it works with any version of GBPVR...

Well.. hmmm... AviSynth script works as a kind of frameserver actually.
.avs files are a kind of configuration files that tell AviSynth what filters and configurations to use before passing the image and audio to the receiving program... e.a. You have a movieclip .avi and you want to convert it to a 25fps framerate and add subtitling to it. Just write that in your .avs script.
Then instead of playing (with the MVP for example, but you can use Media Player or any other program) the .avi you play your .avs... It now plays converted and subtitled....

Hmm... no not exactly. You are telling the mvp to use the frameserver to play a clip. The frameserver 'serves' a clip to the MVP, where GBPVR on its turn converts it to a .mpg file....

Nope. You yourself need to pre-set and pre-configure a .avs file that suits your frameserving needs (the default templates included in ABatchScript can point you in the right direction)... once you have a configurations that works for you, then you save it within ABAtchScript software as a template and ABatchScript searches you harddrive for movieclips. Then you can batch build .avs scipts based on this template for all your movies...

You should really take a look at the www.AviSynth.org website. There is everything you'll ever need to know about AviSynth. If you really want good (and simple, once you get the hang of it) frameserving for your movies, you should defenitly read it...

That is it! First you need to find the right AviSynth script that work for you. Then you can use the Batch Scripter to 'mass-produce'... after that you can tweak your AviSynth script some more if you like and again use the Batch Scripter to mass-replace the previous scripts again...

Tip for all... first just test you .avs files in e.a. Media Player. (by opening the .avs file within :p ) If the script works there, it should work on you MVP.

Yep... .avs files will play in all mediaplayers, because for a mediaplayer there is no differrence when using a frameserver. As far as the mediaplayer is concerned you are just playing a 'normal' clip....
