Schedule recordings across LAN

Hi all,

So far I think GBPVR is great. As I've mentioned, I've got the GBPVR/WinTV PC set up in the back bedrrom dedicated to solely recording shows off the dish.

Now what I would like to do is be able to schedule recordings from my office PC in another room across my wired router -based LAN. I have been using UltraVNC to create a remote desktop and perform the scheduling that way although perhaps there is an easier way.

I've read about networking solutions but they tend to focus on watching TV across the LAN/web or moving the recording location to a central server. I'm not pursuing either of these capabilities. I'm also not interested in scheduling from an 'outside the LAN" location - simply from my office PC.

Searching for webscheduling doesn't result in too many threads and none of them address my specific desire.

Any help is appreciated.

GBPVR has a web server built in...

I suggest you also get the Enhanced Web Administration utility...

If you want to see what the web scheduling looks like, you can click on this link (from the machine you have GBPVR installed)...

If you have changed the port in configuration, you will need to modify that in the link above. You can access your server from inside or outside your LAN by swapping "localhost" to the internal or external IP address of your machine.

I've been using tightvnc. This works but it is a bit awkward. I will have to try the webadmin also.

I also use a simple program "wakeonlan.exe" to wake up my GBpvr machine.

Unfortunately it is beyond my ability to visualize at this point. I need something more basic to start with.

Recap: I want to sit at my office PC ... pull up a TV Guide and schedule a recording. I then want the office PC to relay that command (s) to the bedroom PC (with WinTV and GBPVR) and have the bedrrom PC execute that schedule.

Seems to me I have to load something (GBPVR?) onto the office PC. Perhaps I simply go to a website? (Zap2it?)

Since I'm only operating from behind my lan, I assume no port openings are required on my router (just like UltraVNC).

I'm assuming that the pages you directed me to are that procedure for setting up GBPVR on the bedroom PC which will be required I'm sure but first I have to be able to visualize the procedure.

Excuse me inability to use server/client descriptions but in my scenario the machine that will be sending information (the office), usually called the server, is probably normally refered to as the client. I want to avoid confusion.

Also, perhaps I'm mistaken about webscheduling being better than my current UltraVNC remote desktop scenario. Any thoughts?

Exactly dgeezer.

You do it the same way I do it (simply using different tools). I wake up the GBPVR machine with WOLCMD. I then start a remote desktop session with UltraVNC and perform scheduling activities as if I was sitting at the GBPVR machine. It's actually very nice but does lag especially when scrolling through the TV guide grid. I was thinking there might be a more elegant solution.

Kaffen is right - The webinterface is EXACTLY what you are looking for!!!

1) on your bedroom pc make sure that webadmin is checked (enabled) in config
2) still on your bedroom pc click start->run and type cmd then, when the command window comes up, type ipconfig. this will show you the ip address of your bedroom pc
3) in your office open internet explorer (or firefox, or whatever you use to browse the internet) type in: http://ip_add_of_bedroom_pc:7647/gbpvr/login.aspx (where ip_add_of_bedroom_pc=the ip address you found out in step 2 - maybe 192.168.0.3 or 10.0.0.2 or something similar...)

this should now show you the basic webadmin for gbpvr.

Now if this is starting to look good, download enhanced web admin plugin from the wiki and follow the instructions to install it on your bedroom PC. This will give you a much better looking, more comprehensive version of the above, allowing you to schedule, watch recordings, view the EPG etc... (really a mini-GBPVR) - basically full control of your bedroom GBPVR from anywhere on your LAN (anywhere in the world if you forward the right port through your modem/router)

I just got this working and it really is cool. It's also simple to set up and use. Much simplet than my vnc method. It only took 5 minutes and I was scheduling shows across the LAN.

I had never thought about using this since I was just controling a pc in my house not across the web.

Now I need to get the enhanced version working.
