Mulitple rows of buttons, or sub menus?

A recent request was raised for multiple rows of buttons on the main menu screen instead of scrolling as it currently does. Another request leant more towards using submenus (e.g. a TV menu, which has TV Guide, Recordings, LiveTV, Search Guide).
What would you prefer?

This was a 49 - 51 for me. But if I could add hotkeys (e.g. remote buttons 0-9) to my most often used buttons (wherever they are in the menu hierarhcy) - I clearly would go for submenus.

It's a pretty close one for me as well.

Sub menus would be less "clutter" on the screen, and if more and more plugins are created then eventually you will hit the real estate problem.

This stupid thing thinks I already voted, but put me down for the multiple rows of buttons, I think I'd prefer that over sub-menus. Perhaps someone can pop up a visual aid or two, like an example of each so we can see what the final result is. Also, shouldn't this post be in the wishlist section? LOL

I assume submenus would / could work something like this

With nkh's visual aid, my vote still stands at multiple buttons and not sub-menu's. Anyone who's played with MythTV would probably say the same thing, however in that case it has many buttons AND submenus!
Now, the ability to add/subtract buttons would be a necessity if that were the case. |
