gbpvr and my remote are working fine playing single files, .mpg, .avi, etc. Remote does as expected in gbpvr menus, and when playing skips forward/backward works as expected, etc.

Having acquired a dvdrip, selecting the video_ts directory, gbpvr goes ahead and plays it just fine.

However, the remote is not working to move around the dvd menu, etc. Nor is the keyboard.

What do I need to do, what links do I need to read, to be able to move around the dvd menus, etc.

Alternately ... can anyone point me in a direction wherein I can burn this directory back on to a dvd that I can then stick in my dvd player and proceed as usual? [I presume, for example, I can't just drop the contents of the directory into something like nero express, write a 'data dvd', and magic will result.] I'm not looking to transcode, encode, or any other strangeness, just pick it up and put it down when I click the 'start' button within the app.

Another alternately ... using vlc player all works as expected. Except, of course, it doesn't understand my hauppauge remote. Anyone know how to make vlc understand my remote as slickly as gbpvr does - where it 'just works'?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know why your remote doesn't work, it certainly does for me, but as to how to burn the video_ts directory back to a DVD, yes you can use Nero Express. Just tell it you want to make a Video DVD, then drop the contents of the video_ts folder onto the disk. Done.

Some videod ecoders can make the remote or keyboard not work, so try another video decoder.

Thank you for your message.

I can just drop the files in and the menus, subtitles, and all the other dvd 'niftiness' comes along for the ride? Cool! Thanks!

Thanks for your message. How do I go about doing that / what sorts of things should I be looking for?

You can specify the decoder on the playback tab of the config app.

DOH! I tried it on a RW and it all just works! Thank you! Seeing the warning "Please note that to make a DVD-Video from video files (which are, after all, all that's in a video_ts directory), you must use a DVD authoring tool such as Nero Vision" made me expect this to be a much harder process than it turns out to be!

I presume making a "video DVD" is doing some sort of magic beyond making a "data DVD", so using "just any old burner program" won't work.

Does anyone know why if playing through the computer onto my TV results in a _much_ darker picture than burning to DVD first? A LOT of detail is lost - even daylight scenes look like nighttime scenes. It isn't just a matter of increasing the contrast / brightness. Or, rather, maxing those out makes for an even poorer picture.
- dvd gets played on my Pioneer PVR (has both HD and disc) to my Toshiba TV (tube, 'early' 'high-def' capable - e.g. will only do 1040i or 520p).
- files played on my XP computer go out through nvidia card dvi to TV. As suggested elsewhere in the forums, the TV is my primary monitor here, although you wouldn't know it by looking at it - all my icons, toolbars, start menu, have been moved to the 'secondary', my CRT monitor.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Thanks. I expected that (sort of thing).

I have tried another video_ts download, to similar results - no remote control ability. Using the mouse / keyboard also has no effect. Attempting to back out of the play also does nothing. It seems at that point that gbpvr has passed off playback to something else, so none of these input methods are getting to whatever the player app is - it feels like they are going to gbpvr which is not acting upon the input. Or having no effect. Perhaps it is being passed on to the player. The only way to exit gbpvr at this point is to end task it.

gspot confirms these files are mpeg2, for whatever that's worth.

I guess what I was really asking is which decoder will likely get me where I'm trying to go - without breaking anything else. i.e. I don't want to have to keep coming back here to switch things depending upon what I'm trying to play. .avi file playback, for example, seems to be working just fine.

According to config / playback, video decoder, I have choices of:
- system default
- InterVideo NonCSS Video Decorder for Hauppauge ... (can't read anything after the H, text too wide for the control)
- CyberLink Video/SP Decoder
- NeroVideo Decoder
- ffdshow Video Decorder
- MPEG Video Decoder

Which to use / why would I choose one over another / pros/cons?

Thanks.

Does it help if you change the video decoder on the DVD tab instead of the playback tab? (you can choose any decoder you want, just see which works best for you)

Edit: I'm not sure if video_ts playback uses the decoder specified in the playback or DVD tab
