Dubya, PDA IRDA ports were not designed to control TV/hi-fi's etc. Although software can be made to do it the range is rubbish and you have to really be pointing it at the reciever - I used to use my Ipaq, but just gave up after about an hour..

Interesting fini... I haven't done it yet... but I've done some checking on a few websites and it noted the tungstens range at ~30 feet... so I was gonna give it a try... good thing the software is shareware... if it sucks I might bail for a real remote.

Fini, check out the Sony Clie range of PalmOS-based PDAs - some of these have high-output IRs specifically for media device control purposes. There is/was also a plug-in module for the Handspring Visor (classic, Platinum) to provide a high-output IR port, and 2nd hand Visors are dirt cheap second hand these days!

get a jp1 compatible remote like the one for all urc-8810w from wal-mart for about $18. they have a 6 pin connector (called jp1) in the battery compartment. connect this to the serial, parallel, or usb port on your pc and your can program it any way you like.

some wiring, soldering, and software is involved. the following like will give you some idea of what it takes. if it looks doable to you, i can give a few pointers to get you started. i have the remote mentioned above controlling my entire home theatre including an mpv.
