Thanks for all the useful replies. I won't have time to look into this extensively before next weekend.

I'd recommend a freeware program called 'MP3Tag': http://www.mp3tag.de/

I cant honestly say i fully understand your exact requirements, but it has some very comprehensive renaming features, has the advantage of using amazon as well as freedb.

Hope it helps

Thanks for the update. I have been using that program for the last year or so. It did not have the functions I needed. Otherwise indeed a nice program.

This morning I looked into this program again. It indeed claims to support Regular expressions. I had not used the program for a while. I now remember why not investigating it further:
1) In the version (3.3.0) that I have the Search and Replace(F3) function does not seem to work.
2) In addition the Search and Replace function did not have an option to change the 'composer' field. I do want to normalise those, because I expect Psycik to release pretty soon a version that supports selection of music by composer Big Grin (forgive me my plug)

Last time I looked into this I was a hurry, which made me take MP3Tag for a different programme. So my comments here are completely unjustified.
Today I had a closer look MP3Tag, and I must agree with stu8080 that this indeed is one of the most powerfull MP3 tag editors, and indeed it is Free. It has a recent release 2.3.7. It takes 3.55 Mb on your system
The program does not support 100% of my Regular expression demands, but it has helped a lot in 'normalising' names of artists and composers.
