wake on lan settings?

i know this has nothing to do with gbpvr, but i am having a problem with setting up my gbpvr server to wake on lan. The server is a laptop running winxp, which was originally set up to run on a university network, so it had basically every security measure enabled. I set up the nic to allow wake on lan, and when i send the magic packet from another computer, the server does wake up, but it doesnt wake up completely. I have to go over to it, and press a key on the keyboard or move the mouse, and then the computer is fully awake. In this half-awake state, the power is fully on, but the monitor is blank. As soon as i touch a key, the monitor comes on, and all is back to normal.

My question is: could this possibly be a winxp thing, and what kind of setting can i change to get it to completely wake up? Could it be that windows isnt logging on? Thanks for any help!!!

Is it just that your monitor is set to turn off after a certain amount of time? I'm not sure if wake on lan will also turn your monitor back on.
Check your power settings and see if 'turn off monitor' set to 'never' helps.

If it is not 'on enough' for PVR purposes, can you tell us what is missing and we might have some more suggestions.

i just tried setting the monitor to stay on, so it was on when the computer went into standby, but when it came out of standby by wake on lan, the monitor was off.

as for what is "on": the recording service will record, and i can get into the networked shared folders.

what is "off": the monitor, and any desktop type of programs will not respond (when opened with my hauppague remote) the gbpvr's web admin wont respond. and vnc will connect to the computer, but the screen is black, and nothing can be done on the client side to change that state.

So everything behind the scenes works, but all of the user interface stuff doesn't.

it seams to be the same behavior as automatic resume from standby ;-)
what's funny: i have this behavior only when resuming automatic, through WOL i do get the screen back with no further interaction needed.

when the computer wakes up automaticaly (i.e. scheduled recording or other scheduled task), it broadcasts PBT_APMRESUMEAUTOMATIC through WM_POWERBROADCAST. why? better ask bill about that ;-)

in this state, nearly nothing (except "real" user interaction or whatever M$ regards as such one) will get your screen back on. only after user interaction its broadcasting PBT_APMRESUMESUSPEND, which brings the monitor to life again.

what's a pain in the ass: all user interaction done through remoting (i.e. VNC, using remote control to navigate in GBPVR) is not regarded as real user interaction. only 4 things i've got to work till now:
- the first 2: real keyboard / mouse usage (not a real option, if you don't have them attached ;-) every program simulating this action has no effect
- other interaction as pushing the power button (must be defined as a "do nothing action" in power settings)
- playback video :-)

a very quick and rather dirty workaround would be to map a remote button to call a batch like the following one

yeah, sending a PBT_APMRESUMESUSPEND broadcast might be an option. personally, i'm rather hesitant & not sure if i would really like to mess up the power management though my own broadcasted messages... might wreak havoc ;-)

remote desktop could be regarded as real interaction, dunno about other progs...

i'm currently working on code in that corner, in the end it will be a watchdog plugin for gbpvr to catch PBT_APMRESUMEAUTOMATIC and check if PBT_APMRESUMESUSPEND has followed, else either at first GBPVR action (i.e. menu navigation) or after some defined time period just play back a short resume video sequence through the GBPVR plugin interface. it would still be a workaround, but it's not so messy as the batch & looks a lot more pro to see a welcome video after resume rather than a batch popup in the background ;-)

sub, if you read this (any other developers opinion welcome as well ;-) would you try to broadcast PBT_APMRESUMESUSPEND or rather tend to go for the workaround using video playback and let windows do the message broadcast?

I cant believe it, but your suggestion worked perfectly. What a strange feature of windows.

Anyway, keep me in mind if you move forward with your system monitor. I'll think about a more elegant fix for it as well, and let you know if i come up with anything.
