I just saw this on a linux list I'm on. Sent by a myth tv advocate:

"P.S. version 0.3.1 of mvpmc supports scheduling recordings from the mediamvp.
Pretty darn sweet!"

Need I say more? Big Grin

LOL :p

Workmate of mine (who is an absolute linux guru) spent months getting his myth / MVP setup right. He came over to my place for a party I had going and was absolutely blown out of the water by the GBPVR / MVP setup. He couldn't believe everything was working so nicely! On Windows of all things!

I tried myth once /shudder/

I tried myth once also, just to see the other side. Sure made me appreciate GB-PVR. It's like most everything else in Linux (IMO)...do you want to spend your time using it or fiddling with it to get it to work?

I also found GBPVR after struggling with MythTV. If I thought we were trying to get as many people as possible using GBPVR I would be trolling through the various Myth / Linux forums sending all the newbies here.

Um...Are we trying to get as many people as possible using GBPVR?

Seems like there is only so much Sub to go around.

I don't think that we should try to get GBPVR into every household. If GBPVR got slashdotted or something like that, then the forums would be flooded with people asking the same questions, which takes away from the real support and development. I think that we should recruit people that are able and willing to offer support and development skills (plugin programmers) to expand GBPVR's offerings. If we take the shotgun approach and get everyone to switch to GBPVR, we might get a few good ones, but is it worth it? If we tailor our approach to disgruntled MythTV and Linux users, it may be better because in my mind Linux users are programmers. (You kinda have to be to get Linux and MythTV running, right?) Anyways, that my two cents for our recruitment strategy.

The problem I have with MythTv is that they seem like their overcomplicating the whole PVR process for the sole purpose of creating a hurdle people can feel good about getting over.Smile

I don't understand the needless complexity.
Both use SQL yet I can spend half a day trying to get the frontend of myth to talk to the backend on the same PC. :eek:

But at least you can configure Myth somewhat easily.

I'm currently working on freevo with a software card.
Why Freevo?
Lighter weight & watching TV with a software card is doable with older hardware.
However configuring freevo is no walk in the park.
Imagine GBPVR without a config app.
Just an XML file & batch files that need to be run manually to download EPG data or need to be sceduled to run daily by the user.

That would be Freevo.
I'm really only doing for my own morbid sence of curiosity & because I have a friend that wants to record shows for his kids but just can't swing a PVR 150 right now.

GBPVR just seems to work.
Easy config also.
Plus, getting TV out working in windows is also infinetly easier than in Linux.

I do like the idea of Linux as a platform for a PVR though because the OS is free & you have more control over the install.

There is just a greater learning curve.

Programmer? In my experience you have to be a mindreader, deity, and/or already got mythTV working, to get mythTV working :p . I received one too many "RTFM Noob!" messages to perfectly reasonable questions. I have quite a bit of linux experience and some bits were just totally baffling to me!

No-one here has told me to RTFM, I haven't seen anybody tell anyone else to, most people just seem to help along, even if there are no specific answers.

I think most people refrain from saying RTFM, although the analog to it here would be asking people to search the forums before posting questions, and then posting links to the thread/post that answers their question when they ask it anyways Big Grin

Yeah, true Ted.

But saying;
"hey there was a tread about that here... "

is a lot more helpful than;

"RTFM NOOB!!1!"

Which is what I usually got!
