How many times has this been given as an answer on other forums as well?

try linuxquestions.org, they have been pretty nice to me, although admittedly, I usually ask questions that have people stumped, so theyre beyond the point of RTFM...

meh, I do that here. although I just say, I dont have it in front of me, but check on google. which translates to "well I could go on google and post the extended answer to your question here, but I dont have time right now"

That about sums it up for my two years of running MythTv. I used KnoppMyth which was supposed to simplify things, but every time I upgraded or added hardware it was endless searching for answers. One day I was just fed up and tried GBPvr and haven't looked back since. My box stays up without a fight and we actually use it to watch recordings... Imagine that!

Not exactly, it is the tone. One can mention that the answers can be found without being pissy about it.

I came here after half hearted attempts at getting the other offerings working that my successor at work had running. I used to look after linux servers at college, but I gave up on the PVR software. It's a bit like a secret society where you have to earn your guru status and there can't be too many of them, so don't make it too easy.

He was gobsmacked that you could get GB-PVR up and running in such a short time without all this 'config this' 'build that' garbage.

That's what blew me away about GB-PVR (well, probably the first thing anyway). I had fiddled with several others, including MCE. I found a reference to GB-PVR somewhere (it was in an MCE forum, IIRC) and 15 minutes later it was downloaded, installed, and working AND the mvp box was also working without having to dink around with conversion scripts. AND, it hasn't stopped working since (well, except for a couple times I shot myself in the foot :o ).

I used KnoppMyth for a little while. It was easy to get going but, for someone paying through the nose for satelite bandwidth, the initial download is a killer. I wanted something to take advantage of a PVR350's video output and it really did a great job. The problem that I found is the endless hassel everytime that you want to do something that doesn't come in the box for KnoppMyth.
The only other solution that I found to support the 350's output was GBPVR - and I stopped looking after that. -nuff said?

Precisely! Thats what puts me off so many other forums/sites, and what I love about this place!

I've settled on a Linux Distro I like & the forum seems very helpful & friendly however 99% of my hardware worked right away on the PC i'm testing it on.

PCLINUXOS
I'm not a fan boy so I picked what looked good to me & had a friendly forum.
The ubuntu forum did not seem newb friendly to me.
