Currently, wireless-G is not fast enough for HDTV playback in a remote machine. So I decided to explore transcoding and I have several questions.

1. Is transcoding DVR-MS file to MPEG4 (or MPEG2) possible?
2. Can I keep the same resolutions as the orignal? 1280X720 for 720p shows and 1980X1080 for 1080i shows.
3. How long does it take to transcode 1 hour HDTV (roughly 6GB) DVR-MS? I know it depends on the machine spec. Any ballpark figure will do.

In theory, yes. It needs to have the Cyberlink mux filter installed though, since as a first step it needs to remux the file from .dvr-ms to .mpg. This step is the one that can cause most pain for ATSC users - you may need to try a few versions of the Cyberlink mux to find one that reliably converts your files.

After this remuxing, it calls ffmpeg to do the conversion from .mpg to .avi/.mp4.

I cant see why not.

Yes but you'll need some serious CPU power or hardware MPEG4 decoding.

Depends on the quality you want. The higher the quality, the longer it takes. If you want maximum quality, it will take 2 hours on a Athlon 1800 for a single pass transcode..
