I'm sure this is a dumb noob question, but I can't seem to find any configuration item to switch my MVP to widescreen mode. Searched through the wMVP ROM menu, the Hauppauge dongle, and GB-PVR server but didn't see anything pertaining to MVP display format.

When you run the original Hauppauge MVP software there is a screen where you can set this. It'll remembered by the MVP and applied when you switch back to GB-PVR.

I never ran any Hauppauge server (my main focus on the MVP has always been as a GB-PVR client) so is there no way to manipulate 4:3/16:9 mode in ROM or a dongle?

I guess I could install/remove the server just to tweak the aspect ratio but that seems like a royal PITA.

Thanks for the info, regardless.

No, not currently.

You can have both the Hauppauge and GB-PVR installed, but only one should have their associated services running. That means, if you use GB-PVR you want the GB-PVR Recording service started, but both of the Hauppauge Media services should be either disabled or set to manual.

It was my experience that I did not need to set anything though.

I'm not sure if this is what you want but...

example1: downloaded avi, 16:9 format, viewing on a 4x3 TV.
I use ZProcess to maintain the letterbox aspect ratio inside a 4x3 MPG, and when displayed on 4x3 TV, I see Letterbox...

example2: same 16:9 format AVI viewing on 16:9 TV
I set ZProcess to format the 16:9 to fill and stretch a complete 720x480 MPG. The TV takes the 720x480 and stretches it out to full 16:9

example3: 4x3 avi viewing on 16:9 TV
ZProcess automatically converts to pillarbox mode, (black bars on left and right)

Perhaps you don't like pillarbox. I'm a bit of a puritan myself, and if the source is 4x3, I should see it in 4x3, regardless of the size of my TV...

So does this mean that the Hauppauge server software is simply making a change to the system registry?

If so, it seems that you could add a similar feature to GBPVR.

On the other hand, I doubt this is the way it works since the MVP aspect ratio never sticks. Indeed, it has never really worked for me in the first place.

Yet another half-baked Hauppauge feature. Sigh.

No, there is no registry setting. Its saved in the flash memory on the device itself. I could create a similar function in GB-PVR, but it hasnt been a high priority.

I prefer original format always, so pillarbox is fine with me. My problem arises from connecting my wMVP to a new 16:9 TV and seeing the results.

Ideally the MVP would have something analogous to GB-PVRs "F7" aspect mod key so I could flip it on the fly. ZProcessing the files is a possibility but at the moment I'd like an alternative to modifying files.

I have not yet decided whether to leave my wMVP connected to the 16:9 or a 4:3 TV so I'm postponing any sort of final decision.

Thanks for the ideas.

I think sub would concur, that the switch in the Flash memory of the MVP, from 16:9 to 4:3 will only really affect the GUI of GB-PVR, and not any MPG content.

Therefore you do have to deal with maintaining aspect ratios of the converted avis to the temporary MPG GB-PVR 'asks' to have converted on the fly...

Previously, GB-PVR would call a smaller utility, FFmpeg. It would take an avi and transcode it into a standard 720x480 picture (or quarter thereof)

If you had a 16:9 image and crammed it into a 720x480 MPG, and displayed it on a 16:9 TV, the MPG would unfold and you'd see correct aspect ratio. If you tried to watch the same 720x480 MPG on a 4x3, it would be suished horizonatlly because the original AVI is too wide for the TV...

ZProcess can take care of that stuff for you. It intercepts requests to FFmpeg, and does it's own thing, turning a 16:9 AVI into a letterbox MPG for viewing on 4:3 TV, or Unfolding the MPG so that the 16:9 TV sees correct aspect ratio...

And as I said, a 4x3 TV show would be converted into a Pillarbox on your TV.

There is currently no way to 'F7' on an MVP, on the fly. You will need to transcode you avi's one way or another.

Hi Sub:

I hope you'll consider adding this sometime soon.

Among other things, you'll probably reduce support questions and, more importantly, I trust you will be able to actually make MVP aspect ratio changes WORK . . . unlike Hauppauge.

Thanks.
