If your recording server is running 24/7 anyway, why not put it to good use?

I run Folding@home on all my computers. This Stanford University project uses spare CPU cycles to analyze protien "folding", Misfolding of protiens is a key contributor to many diseases. F@H runs at a low priority, so that recording quality will not be affected.

I have been running the console version for several years now (team 1017) and it is very polite in releasing the cpu for other tasks and I have no issues with gbpvr or even more importantly my stock software Quotetracker + GBPVR even though my cpu is at 100% 24/7. I love to contribute and it all works well together. Thanks for promoting the folding@home project I am sure many here run their machine 24/7.

I have been using similar background processing software on my GBPVR server for over a year without problems. As the machine runs 24/7 as mail / web server as well, I wanted something useful for it to do with its spare time. I run Rosetta ( a medical research program like Folding ) and Einstein ( analysing results from gravity wave detectors ). Both run under the Boinc project, from here

When running it appears to max out the CPU, but it runs at lowest priority taking over from the "system idle" process so dosen't cause performance issues with other programs, and I cannot tell any difference in the performance of GBPVR or any other program, whether Boinc is running or not.

It was very simple to set up and its good to know that my spare CPU time is going towards helping out with the advancement of science.

I never turn my PVR machine off and this makes me feel better about the wasted juice.

So between GB-PVR and Folding@Home I am going to see how long a 5 year old PIII with a 200 watt power supply can survive at 100% cpu usage 24/7.

That is partly why I started using Boinc also.

I started using Boinc (in Oct 2005) on a 550MHz P III with 256M Ram under Linux. That ran fine for 6 months before I retired it and put everything onto the GBPVR server.
