hey Sub,

<AvoidDuplicateRecordingsIfPossible>
what does this setting do exactly? is it similar to RecTracker in that it doesn't record show instances that have been recorded previously or does it ignore multiple instances of shows in the current queue of show to be recorded? (or both)

<AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>
does this clean the database of previously recorded shows which no longer have an mpeg file?

and one more:
<SecondChanceRecording>

thanks.

I have no idea what rectracker does, but this setting will cause a recording not to be scheduled if a pending or ready recording exists with the same zap2it supplied show identifier.

Correct.

30 seconds after a recording was due to start it checks the size of the recording. If it doesnt seem to be growing normally, it'll try restarting the recording. For analog devices you wont neet this. With digital devices you shouldnt need this, but it is useful insurance.

ok, sounds like <AvoidDuplicateRecordingsIfPossible> does what RecTracker does. i would like to only use GBPVR functions because RecTracker uses its own database and i would like to ask UJB for some additional features in the EWA, so it's GBPVR database only.

so, i also assume that given what <AutoRemoveMissingRecordings> does, you probably don't want to use these two together?

I cant think of any reason why not. They're not at all related. AutoRemoveMissingRecordings is just about cleaning up the database if the user deletes a file from the disk rather than from the user interface.

GB-PVR does not attempt to do duplicate checking other than those ready or pending recordings you already have. Its primarily to avoid the situation where the same show might air multiple times in a week. Its not about keeping long term history of what you've been recording.

ah, ok. there is a difference there. RecTracker is keeping a long term history so that a show that you recorded months ago, watched, then deleted, is not recorded again. well, that is how i use it anyway.

so if my database has entries which date way back to recordings done months ago, but the mpegs no longer exist (which mean i guess that they are not "ready"), are they tagged differently in the database such that <AutoRemoveMissingRecordings> won't recognize them and ignore identical future recordings?

They'd all still show up in you Recordings screen as though they were available, which sounds pretty messy to me.

i guess i have never noticed because i use Jeff's Video Archive to manage and view my recordings. his system does a check on start up and auto-removes any entries from view that no longer have mpegs.

i guess i have taken this for granted up to this point thinking that this behaviour was "by design", but it seems somewhat a combination of accidental and part of VA. i certainly prefer it. please don't break anything for me Smile. my ignorance has indeed been bliss...
