http://www.joost.com

Joost™ provides a new way of watching TV that combines the best of full-screen television entertainment with online interactive and community benefits to bring an unprecedented selection of video content to viewers anytime, anywhere. Joost is based on a state-of-the-art, secure, peer-to-peer streaming technology.

Joost™ is a new way of watching TV on the internet, which uses new and established technologies to provide the best of both the internet and TV worlds. We're in the process of making it as TV-like as we can, with programmes, channels and adverts. You can also see some things that we think will enhance the TV experience: searching for programmes and channels, for example, as well as social features like chat. There are many more new features to come

Currently, channels are like playlists of videos. You can flip between channels, or use the programme guide to choose a channel or a video to watch. The channels start when you play them and not at any particular day or time. If you let them continue they will loop round to the beginning again. If you change channel and then switch back again, you'll start at the beginning of the programme again. In later versions we will have different kinds of channels, including ones that behave more like ordinary TV channels. Occasionally, you may see an advert.

From the looks of it, Joost is like a PVR in it's own right. Unless the release an API that allows the preferences, channels etc to be accessible then I don't understand how that would work.

I mean, I don't quite understand the full possibilities as yet, I'm just starting in this arena, but I can't see why they would provide a full blown API to take you away from their software, when they can control things.

With that said, I do have another problem with the concept. I don't know about the rest of the world, but I know that even though I'm on an unlimited ADSL package, if I start streaming television, then I'm going to attract the attention of Sky and fall fowl of Fair Usage Policy.

Skype/Kazaa is well known for their non-open solutions.
Don't expect too much.
If they want to show commercial content they will have to promise content protection.

Couple things I see with Joost (just to dust off an old topic)
Joost uses an H.264 codec (aka AVC, aka MPEG-4 Part 10, aka ISO/IEC 14496-10) called CoreAVC, created by CoreCodec.

So, MVP is out unless you transcode on the fly.

They provide software, so, like hammerstein says,
